We need our future Paul Pierce and he's on the market as of next year. Pierce could come off the bench effectively.
Rudy Gay Rudy Gay Rudy Gay Rudy Gay Come to Boston!!!

I don't see Rudy Gay coming to Boston.

Someone is going to overpay for him in free agency.  Celtics only shot would be the MLE and he's gonna get more than that.

Also, Pierce is still way too effective to be coming off the bench.  Even if Gay were to come here (once again, very unlikely) he's the one that would be coming off the bench.  Not Pierce.

The C's have money year. Remember they can sign and trade players. There future isn't too great especially Pierce retires. This team lacks a creator. I strongly believe we will land 1 if not 2 of the major free agents next year.

Where's the money gonna come from?  Its a mirage.  They're going to be over the cap again next year.  They're not landing any major free agents next year.

I don't understand why the concept of us not having Cash in 2010 is so hard to understand.

Unless we trade the big three where not bringing in anyone major from the 2010 free agent class.

People need to accept the fact that the next couple of years we're going to still be a good team but in slow decline as the Big Three age.  After that, in all likelihood we're going to have at least a couple years where we struggle.  At best, we'll be a middle of the road team.

It's up to Danny Ainge to find a creative way to get us back to the top sometime in the next ten years after the Big Three reach the end of their careers without us having to tank for a couple seasons to get lottery picks.

Although its hard to find a realistic scenario where we stay contenders and get Gay i do like the idea of bringing him in. He could be something like RJ to Rondo's Kidd. Gay is better than Jefferson ever was(not by much) and is a borderline all-star. If i were Danny I'd consider trading Ray for someone like Gay If I didn't think this team could truly contend.

I know that's not going to be a popular idea...

To be fair... the guy IS wearing a Marbury jersey in his avatar.  I'm just saying... I doubt he really has done much research into what the salary cap is.  No offense...

In his defense, I can see where the numbers might work to get 1 free agent, but I doubt any of the big names would want to come Boston b/c they'd be bench players. Ray would be unrestricted, Pierce could opt out, and both could resign for less. That would put us 41.8 mil and the cap is set at 69.9...
The past few years we've been about 15 mil over the cap, so keep that consistent... sign 1 big name to 10 mil over 3 years like Ginobli(6th man anyways) and sign MLE player like Channing Frye or Brendan Haywood. Then sign Ray to a contract like 8 mil over 2 or 3 years and Pierce to 15 over 4 or 5 years...41.8+10+8+15+5=79 Mil. That puts us close to where we're at now, same talent plus some and we would still have the bi annual plus vet min.
Can't stop, Rondo!

I think you are getting the cap confused with the luxury tax.   The tax level I believe is around 70 mil this year and the salary cap 57 mil.  Next year the cap is expected to drop from what I've read to around 53 mil.  I know Roy has explained this countless times and can explain it better than I but we have almost zero chance of landing one of the big free agents next year especially it being the first year of Rondo's big contract.

We don't have money. Ray Allen can just walk away and we won't have anything.

You're forgetting that the salary cap is going to go way down so we won't be able to spend as much next year as we might have in the past.

The salary cap will probably be $50-53 million.  We're going to be using some of that cap space on Rondo's higher salary (from the extension).  Also, Paul will most likely not opt out.  While $15 million a year for Paul is probably acceptable (if he were to opt out and resign), I think Ray will want more like $10 a year.

Honestly we're only going to have enough room to try to resign some of the guys we already have and bring in another person with the MLE.  Although if Marquis continues to play well we'll probably spend most of our MLE on him, and the rest on Shelden.

Not to mention that Rondo's $9M kick in beginning with next year. We could let Ray Allen and every other player with the last year of his contract come of the books, but even then we would be over the cap.
