It's hard to tell what's going on in the head these days of Delonte West. But FanHouse wanted to give Cleveland's mercurial guard an opportunity to explain some of his recent doings. . . .

"One plus one is two and C always comes out to A and B,'' West said to FanHouse.
West, who hadn't spoken to reporters since media day Sept. 28, was asked what that meant.

"One plus one always be two,'' he said.

West again was asked to clarify.

"One plus one always be two, brother,'' he said.

West declined further comment.

Later in the day, West was put on the inactive list for Wednesday night's game against Orlando at Amway Arena. A Cavaliers insider said that an incident happened that was called not major but the team decided it was best to give West the night off.

Basically, the guy is killing his reputation, and his career along with it.  I'm not sure what the "incident" was, but giving interviews like this just make him sound like he's out of his mind.  It's sad to see; I like Delonte, and wish him the best.  I just hope that he's taking this more seriously than it seems from afar.

That sucks. I can say from experience there is nothing worse in the world than seeing someone who needs help, but for one reason or another (as in self determined reasons disease, money, whatever) isn't getting it.

It's gotta be hard to deal with inner demons with a microphone in your face and an espn headline every other week.

Yeah but be honest with yourself... he said wackier things when he wasn't having all those issues, or at least when he wasn't showing them with the celts...

Was he always "bipolar"? Maybe its the meds speaking, and not Delonte. Some side effect from those meds: gain weight, feel groggy all day, become forgetful, walk around feeling dizzy, shake, twitch, feel nauseous, or have an anxiety attack.

Hopefully he can recover, and start kicking butt again.

It sounds like the "incident" is that he's afraid to get on airplanes

Over the last two years, at times West has grown nervous before flying and at times, said multiple sources, has even delayed team flights until he can be calmed down and convinced to get on the plane.

... too bad.  I really loved Delonte.  I don't like that he's entering the Tyson zone.

At least he can play all the home games.

As a fellow man who's scared out of his mind to get on a plane allow me to offer my insight.

I think Delonte is simply afraid of planes and if that's the case he either needed to be medicated in some way to fly or he just sucks it up and tries to distract himself from thinking about the fact that he's going to be many many miles up in the air.

If he was on some meds then perhaps that allows for a possible explanation of how incoherent his interview appears.

OR

He's talking in some sort of code because he's ashamed to reveal to the world about his "phobia" of sorts.

So, I interpret the whole "1 plus 1 always be two" thing, to translate somewhat to:

I'm scared of flying (1) and I didn't end up getting on the plane (1) so they told me not to worry about it and gave me the night off (=2!)

my thoughts:

#1 I don't know anyone who knows anyone whose ever died in a plane crash.  I know lots of people who know lots of people who have died in car crashes.  Suck it up, woman. ... kidding.  I've argued for hours with my crybaby friend about his fear of flying and how illogical it was. Eventually, I just got fed up and started posting daily youtube links on his facebook like this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJMtkaY6dlM

... It was actually kinda funny.  We went to Maui together for his sister's wedding and every day I had a new facebook status update along the lines of:

"6 more days till Maui!!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHic8R-zc8c "

or...  "5 more days till Maui!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kXmSHPjc3M  "

... Is that sick?  Oh well.  We survived the flight (although he did almost have a panic attack when I started pretending like the latch on my fold-out trey was broken and then started watching "Final Destination" on my laptop).  Reverse jinx, anybody?

#2 I don't think Delonte was making comments about his fear of flying... he was responding to the several other "strange" things he's done recently and basically saying, "it is what it is"...

There is very good therapie to get rid of specific phobias. I've seen patiënts cured from this in less then 6 months. With the help of good exposure therapie and CBT with the right medication. Often an SSRI.
Though i fear the allostatic load on this young man has become too big. He needs good help and fast.

Delonte West has always said strange things, even since his college days. Why is "one plus one always be two" the straw that breaks the camel's back?

Do you think it's the type of publicity his employer wants right now, with all the other issues (guns, domestic violence charges) floating around?  It makes him sound like a lunatic.
