I was harsh on JR last night in the game thread.  As I thought more about it, though, I realized I was a bit too harsh. 

I agree he is probably not a C for much longer (certainly not past this season).  But keep in mind that he has been asked to do one thing - defense.  He is not asked to look for his shot, and nor should he when Daniels, House and Wallace are out there (let along BBD).  What we really need out of a backup wing spot is someone who plays good D.  Is his D good?  I guess a better question would be, who else would you want for that position who plays better D.  Perhaps Ime Udoka, I don't know.  But Giddens doesn't look lost on D, so I think he is okay.  Any newcomer would be lost on D.

TP Cman. JR's defensive effort is always there and that is easily overlooked. I'd like to see Doc let him defend the other teams best scorer for small stretches. It would do a lot for his confidence.

Right on about the defense.  Doc emphasized he needs to defend to get on the court, not worry about scoring.  The defense has been fine.  I'll worry about the offense when Doc tells him to start scoring and at the point he looks inept.

Defense has been fine?  He jumps on more pump fakes than TA!  At least he shows off his athleticism, since he's jumping four feet in the air when he does so.

JR Giddens deserves not one meaningful minute of playing time until he learns (in practice and in garbage time) how to play under control. 

There's a reason that Hudson's been getting off the bench several minutes before Giddens during these recent garbage times; I think you can extrapolate from that who the coaches like and who they don't.

Not sure what Giddens is doing in practice, but the nervous excitement and out of control look are evident in games. I do think he may be trying too hard after seeing Hudson go into the lineup way before him. That probably has worked on his head a little.

Hudson does seem to be following directions very precisely and coaches all love that. Giddens may need to focus on that to 'make the jump' in the eyes of the staff. Still, sometimes when you try really hard not make a mistake, stuff happens.

JR looked pretty solid in the preseason, but the regular season pressure cooker fried his nerves and whatever cool he had boiled over.  Case in point: last night he took a dribble hand-off around a big man screen but his legs went to fast for his body and he ran straight into the ground, desperately tomahawking the ball out of bounds before he landed.  I was embarrassed for him.

If he can take a few deep breaths and let his energy work for him he could be more useful.  His speed, quickness, length, athleticism and rebounding ability make his productive ceiling much higher than TA or Walker, but I really don't think he has the head for it. 

I'd trade him for a wing-sized shooter.

Same thing that you saw in Summer League with Giddens; the game needs to slow down for him.

No reason at all for him to get any minutes in games where the outcome is still in doubt.  Not worth it.  Watching JR Giddens on the court makes me pine for the return of Tony Allen, for ****!

And as a bonus, Scali could always be bought out and come back to his rightful 12th mans spot.

My thoughts on our end of bench guys:
Scal-keep him, valuable guy to have near end of bench, if he's traded due to contract see if we can pick him up after he's bought out
Giddens-chicken with head cut off, valuable because of salary in trade only, I don't think he'll EVER be an nba player
Walker-if healthy, like him for limited minutes at sf
Tony Allen-see giddens
Hudson-good end of bench guy, shows defensive hustle
Williams-like what I see, good pick up

why won't houston take giddens, tony and scal for battier

JR was a star in college, and even was named Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Year. Could this still be a case of being too eager. Just keep rebounding and playing D. Maybe he'll figure it out soon.

I'm assuming this is in response to my post since it references what I said.

Yes, the defense has been fine.  He's covering his man, he's not getting burned, he's not gambling on D and while his help defense can improve, it's not hurting the team when he gives his man space while he tries to help.

OK performance for an end-of -bench player still learning the game.  Do I think he should be getting time ahead of anyone else on the active roster, no.  That's a different subject altogether.  I'd like to see something out of him on offense but I know he'll be in Maine or streetclothes once the injured start healing and getting back in game shape so any likelihood of him getting game time in a month is pretty much nil

I think JR could be an effective NBA player the same way I think TA could be.  Put them on a bad team, and they will put up some numbers, excite some fans, but ultimately, not really help the team win.  Unfortunately, neither of them really know how to play in a structured system. 

Anyone know when Bill Walker will be back?  His skills aren't as developed as the other 2, but he seemed to have a much better understanding of the game, and I would like to see if he has made any progress in his perimeter game.

I never thought I'd ever say this, Please heal quickly Tony.

I'm starting to question if JR ever picked up a ball. How was he a 1st round pick? He looks like he never played ball in his life. If Tony Allen is our worst player with his 7 points a game, please give me 3 Tony's. I would like to make a public apology to Doc for ever questioning him about Giddens. Seriously Bring back Gerald Green.

This doesn't make sense on two levels.

First, why do we need Tony Allen to get healthy quickly?  Even in a game that was a clear blowout by the end of the second quarter, J.R. Giddens couldn't get in until the last 4 minutes of the game.  While this may a condemnation of him, it also means that there isn't a need for him.  We also don't need Tony Allen.  Neither is going to get minutes here.

Which also begs the question of why we'd want to trade him.  What are we going to get besides someone else like him?  That player wouldn't player either.  So why would we bother to trade two players who aren't going to get off the bench either way?

J.R. may suck, but it really doesn't matter.
