Right now, this really doesn't make a big difference.  All of the rest of the rotation players are healthy.  Williams (and Scal when he is ready) are both solid enough to step in to pick up a few minutes, and help out if there is foul trouble.

If this injury was in February, when everyone else is starting to get worn down, then it could be a problem, but right now, it shouldn't be a huge deal.

What will be the real question is how Baby deals with it.  Does he sit on his ass, gain 15 pounds, and have to start from scratch when he returns, or does he take this opportunity to hit the treadmill hard, lose another 10-15 pounds, and come back with a purpose?  I honestly don't know what to expect.

Agreed. I'm not worried about excessive minutes on KG or Sheed either. Sheed can play the 4 or 5, so with a 3-man rotation of bigs (KG, Sheed, and Perk), that is 33 minutes each. That is what I want them playing. Sprinkle in 5 or 10 minutes of landlord and you are looking at 30 minutes or less for each. No big deal right now as long as those three stay healthy until Scal or Baby return.

Did everybody forget Baby says he now trains/practices MMA?

Something tells me this isnt the full story and he decided to be stupid with some MMA type crap.

Can we sign Sweetney as an injury replacement?

We would still need to cut someone.

We actually could have used BBD as an option against Shaq. I don't think minutes are an issue this early in the season, but BBD has had success defending Shaq.

Unless BBD ends up being out for 4-5 months ... it's a fairly unimportant injury.

The Celtics can just give KG, Perk and Sheed some more minutes. The team also has very strong fifth and sixth string big men in Brian Scalabrine and Shelden Williams.

The Celtics can easily weather a short-to-medium term injury to Glen Davis.

I think this hurts us tomorrow as far as defending Shaq goes. Williams, Sheed, and Garnett don't have the bulk to guard him. I'm not worried too much about the time he'll miss starting the season. Baby as our 4th big is a luxury.  All we really need from our 4th big is 10 minutes anything after that is gravy. Having Williams or Scal play 10 minutes a night isn't much of an issue.

While I think the team will be fine, this team could be the difference between home court advantage throughout the playoffs, and not.  There's no need to panic, but it certainly isn't ideal.

Sadly, I pretty much guarantee if somebody had said "which Celtic is most likely to hurt himself in a stupid manner?", Tony Allen would have been first.  I think there's little doubt that BBD would have been the second choice.

to play devil's advocate here, since a lot of people are dismissing the seriousness of the loss......

the injury COULD be detrimental to the team.  although the other day bbd claimed not to know his role, one major part of the role he needed to fill was to keep kg, sheed, and perk's minutes down during the regular season, when applicable.  i think bbd's role will diminish during the post season, as the rotation will get shorter and he will be used as a situational player.  keeping sheed, kg, and perk refreshed heading into the post season will help this club immensely and hopefully help to prevent risk of injury.  the other thing to consider, it is his shooting hand, and if he is out for a while, it could effect his shot.

last potential impact.....conditioning.  although the injury should not prevent him from staying in shape and doing cardio, his motivation could decrease and impact other areas of his life (ie- eating habits, exercise, etc)

if bbd is back by xmas, i agree that it isnt too much of a factor UNLESS perk, sheed, or kg suffer an injury.

More than the PF situation, I'm more interested on how Doc will handle the wing situation with Baby out. It should force Scal to play more PF minutes... will he slide him to SF as KG or Perk comes back into the game, maybe subbing in for Pierce or Ray? Will he just play 5 bench players at the same time with maybe Giddens or Hudson getting a bit of burn? Maybe extend Rondo's playing time and play him alongside Daniels and House. Those are the situations are more interested in as a consequence of Baby's injury.
