I know it was meant as KG insurance, but now the Sheldons Williams signing is making Danny look like a genius
Uh Sheldon Williams wasn't KG insurance, if anything Rasheed was.

Realistically there is no KG insurance, he's our best player and we cannot replace him.

Losing Baby for 10 -20 games is one thing but if he is lost for much longer it will have a big impact. It's not that he is the most important player on the team or anything but the guy helps win ball games. There are very, very few players in this league who have the strength and size to deal with a guy like Shaq. Baby is one of only a handful and his loss will be evident tomorrow night. I'm not comparing these two players, only their relative importance to team, but it's like Bill Walton on the 86 team. Was he the most important player on that team? No way. But, would the title have been won without him? No way.

Bill Walton and BBD are not even comparable.  The best way to deal with Shaq is to put in Rasheed and create a matchup in complete favor of the Celtics.  At this stage of his career Shaq is nowhere near as physically dominant.  Yes, he is big and strong, but he doesn't have the speed or hops to dominate around the hoop.

I actually meant as just a body to have. Last year we were way too small. That was one of the issues Doc addressed.

---

Baby is important as it provides a somewhat banger off the bench. Sheed has not played inside in a while and has a drop in rebounding percentage, especially offensively. With all the outside threats we have, it'd be good to have a inside presence when the bench unit comes in.

Man that hurts if BBD is out all year. Here's to Sheldon Williams being a revelation. If BBD is out all year can we sign another player or is that 15 players 15 total?

Man, I can't believe a fractured thumb could mean missing the full season.  This is a lot more serious than I thought it was, and I'll be holding my breath til we know for sure.

I don't know about the extra roster spot, somebody who knows this better - is there a DL-type setup where we can free up a spot if he's (knock on wood) out all year?

Let's get Boom Tho on the team. He's a good defender and it's about time he gets on an NBA team. ANd he's close friends and has been compared to Leon Powe; always a good sign.

Not really.  There's a mechanism in place where a team can appeal to the league for another roster spot, but that basically requires a team to be devastated by injuries, from what I understand.

I didnt say Bill Walton and Baby were comparable. In fact I said I was only comparing their relative importance to the team in that the 86 team would not have won it without Walton and if Baby doesnt play this season we will have a hard time winning it this year. Laugh if you want but you know the old saying about the guy who laughs last.

This is correct. The only time in which an extra spot is granted is if a roster is full, but cannot have 12 active players (so 4 players need to be injured to grant the extra roster spot)

I know David Aldridge mentioned it:

Quote
The Celtics were also waiting on Monday for results of a second opinion on the right thumb injury suffered by backup center Glen Davis, who reportedly suffered the injury in an off-court altercation with a former teammate of his Sunday. "It doesn't look good," said a league source. The Celtics were hopeful that Davis hasn't fractured his thumb; if he did, surgery would be required and Davis would likely miss several months, if not the entire season.

Link

Of course, who knows -- Aldridge has been wrong previously this off-season, and he even appears wrong in this article (saying Rondo is asking for a max contract, when his agent has said publicly that he's not).

Interesting to see if this gets Danny to fire up the trade machine. Hope Lester does not fall victim to this chain of events that would be too cruel. Hopefully Shelden can prove himself. BBD was looking at reduced minutes anyway.
