tommy point for you, rav.  My kid is studying for the SAT. Is it too late to switch??

No, it's fine. The two tests are very similar actually (I've done them both), so any preparation he/she did will have helped on the ACT.

The main differences are:
  • ACT questions are slightly easier (except for maths)
  • To make up for the above, you get less time per question
  • ACT has 5 sections - English, Maths, Reading, Science and Writing (optional).
  • SAT has 10 sections mixed about through the test, but the ACT has all questions of one type in one section e.g. 75 English questions, then 60 maths questions and so on in the order of sections above
  • The essay is slightly different

You can get better info at www.actstudent.org. The above is just a summary, not an exhaustive list.

Personally, I found the ACT easier. If you find that you like the ACT better, I guess you can buy the prep book ($19.95 I think - I didn't use it though, so I don't have a review for you!), but you need not bother with a Princeton Review-type prep course if you've done one for the SAT.

It won't hurt just to take a shot - you don't need to send the score if you don't like it. Anyway, best of luck to your child (it's funny I say that because he/she is probably my age) whichever test he/she does.
