when the chant started, lets be honest....it was in a sarcastic way bc he was a "goofy white guy" that was considered a scrub.
however, over the years, i think the chant has transformed into a term of endearment.
I agree that many mean it in support of Scal from just being at games where it has happened, but it's truly getting old. Scal actually contributes when on the floor without wowing anyone. This is the kind of thing that should be reserved for Sweetney.
I agree with DL totally. However, I don't think it should be reserved for Sweetney AT ALL. His dad died and he overate to try and control the pain he felt. That's not something to mock, especially when its clear he has really good low post skills. I actually hope he makes the team and works of the 30 lbs that Donny estimated he needs to lose. I'd love to see his life NOT be derailed by a tragedy.
I don't think it has as much to do with being the goofy white guy, as much as being the perceived worst player on the team. When the Celtics are going well their crowds have always gone a little goofy for the scrub (is Scal "the scrub" is another debate, but that's certainly the way he is perceived by the people doing the chanting).
I can remember Deurod chants (though he had the added advantage of having a name that started with an OOOOOO sound - which we all know is utterly (cow pun intended) irresistable to sound out loudly)...Conner Henry...Jeff Judkins...Hell, even Greg Kite to a degree...Charles Bradley.
I think there's just an irritating slant toward what's trendy with a large part of the Celtics crowd now. The crowd does what feels good, more than what's necessarily good for the team. For whatever reason the Scal thing still has legs.
Then again it just might be the perfect storm or perceived scrub and amiable goofy white guy, redhead, chunky fellah etc...
