Based on what I saw on Friday, Shelden Williams did not look all that good.  So why not trade him to someone for a 2nd round pick in 2099 and sign Sweetney. (Actually I am not even sure if Williams contract is gauranteed so maybe it is easier than this).

Sweetney has a long way to go but the 15 roster spot is basically only insurance and a practice body.  Let Sweetney hang around and practice himself back in shape (maybe he can do Nutrisystem or something and lose as much weight as Mike Golic).

In the end, Williams does not appear to be someone who will ever be able to play and help to actually decide a game but in a few months maybe Sweetney could be.  In either case, we are talking for emergency use only.

We should sign Sweetney to the Red Claws so that we can watch him while he's there with Giddens, along with monitoring his weight progress. Then at somepoint in the season, based on the performances Williams/Sweetney, we could drop Shell and pick of the Escalade.

We could also keep an eye on him and sign him if we trade Scal/TA for only one player in return.

How many seasons does it take for a player to get in shape?

Keep Williams and let Cliff try and turn him into a defensive player that fits.

I live in Greater Portland ... it's a waterfront city ... you put Sweetney here with the Red Claws, and the Expo will be under water! ;)

Second round pick in 2099???
Even if you meant 2009, that already passed.

Maybe he could make like Jared and AlJeff and do it on Subway footlongs?  And I agree, let him diet while training with the C's as the 15th man.  Have him move in with Bryan Doo.

It was a joke (and since I have to explain it, apparently not a very good one) trying to illustrate that the trade would be for the least possible trade value.

I agree that getting Sweetney in shape may be chasing fool's gold but this could also be turned around to ask "how many seasons does it take for Shelden to figure out how to play NBA calibar basketball".

I have seen nothing so far to make me think Clifford Ray or anyone else can make Williams into a player.  Sweetney is more productive right now and there is at least a possiblity that he can get in shape and be even better.

It is actually pretty amazing that Sweetney can even be on the court and score points with a preseason NBA team in his current miserable state of conditioning.  There are some real skills hidden under there, skills that Williams apparently just doesn't have (and you just can't teach).

Luckily, the success of either of these two is not all that critical to the success of the team.

I would love to keep Sweetney and Williams. What a deep, solid front line we would have to throw at Dwight Howard, Shaq, Bynum, etc. Cut Giddens and/or TA, they are useless.

I got no problem giving Sweets a shot provided he gets an incentive 'weighted' contract.

I think we need to look at Williams as a big upgrade over Mikki Moore and let it go. It could have been worse, what if we got stuck with Robert Swift instead?

Funny, to me he already looks like he fits.  Reminds me of a bigger Ryan Gomes.  Silent but deadly.  Smooth criminal status.
God bless and good night!

I thought Landlord looked pretty decent in the first game and not so good in the second.  So be it, he's the fifth big.  I'm rooting for Sweetsney to get himself in shape, but he's *not* an NBA player right now, he literally cannot get a rebound unless it bounces right to him, and he can't defend a La-Z Boy recliner.  He simply cannot be on the court in a real game until he gets himself in better shape.  Doesn't need to be cut, doesn't even need to be as svelte as BBD is now, but he can't play as-is.

I agree with those that say we should sign Sweetney to the D-League team and monitor him and bring him on board if his conditioning gets a lot better and he shows some serious production in the D-League.  By that point we might have already freed up a roster spot but getting rid of TA or Giddens.
