It seems that JR Giddens has the physical tools to play in the league but the mental focus? I think he was drafted because of the 'P' word and he will be here another year for the same reason. Whether he ever has a shot at minutes on this team is another subject.
The Celtics are all but desperate to add depth at the wing...or are they? We keep Tony Allen on the roster, even after Bill Walker is injured there is no FA invitee in camp competing for a job.
The fact that Giddens and Walker see virtually no minutes in their rookie year is not a big deal given Doc Rivers penchant for not playing Rookies. If Ray Allen or Paul Pierce were out injured for a month would we sign or trade for a wing player? Play Daniels, Scalabrine and House a lot more? I bet it would be number two.
I have to ask myself.....are Giddens or Walker better able to help us right now than Rashad McCants? Carlos Delfino? There are/were a bunch of guys available out there that could help us but can they crack Doc's rotation ahead of Eddie or Scal, let alone Daniels?
If the 'P' word is potential, I completely disagree. He had little potential at his age. They thought he could contribute within a year. Walker was drafted on potential. Not Giddens.
The fact that Giddens didn't get minutes IS a big deal. Less so for Walker since Walker is younger. That Giddens couldn't see the floor when Doc was forced to play Walker and when TA was playing gimpy seems a pretty good clue into how little the team thought of Giddens.
It's not a big deal. Again, to be able to get on the floor, you need to dress up. Walker was with the team for a good portion of the 2nd half, Giddens wasn't. Giddens didn't have time to practice with the team, for one, so Doc wouldn't have inserted him... He also was nursing a wrist injury at times during the season, sometimes he played sometimes he didn't (in Dleague).
So, that Walker, who was with the actual team under Doc eyes barely got on the floor is more telling. One of Walker and Giddens, was going to be given the opportunity. In my opinion it should've been Giddens, they chose Walker and he did nothing with it.
Walker has more potential no doubt... I've been of the opinion that Giddens is better right now, and should've been playing instead of Walker. But it's not my call to make. Would he have taken advantage of the opportunity had it presented itself? I really don't know, but the opportunity should've been there for him instead of Walker as far as I'm concerned. Walker stood out during preseason, plus he was with the team during summer... that helped him quite a bit in that regard.
And we had good depth at the wing positions, plus when people started going down, Marbury and Moore showed up... and the minutes went to them because they needed to be prepared, forcefully, for the playoffs. They didn't work out.
