Do you think theres any chance that the Celtics deny his player option and allow him to become an unrestricted Free Agent? I haven't seen him at all this season, but his rookie season wasn't really inspiring at all, and it seems like he really doesn't know how to play the game of basketball. Playing against NBDL for a whole season will not develop him much imo and him getting DNP's over and over will do nothing for him either. When he was drafted I was really excited because he has all the physical tools to be a good player but he just doesn't know how to put it all together. He seems like a prime candidate to fall of the face of the earth, go to Europe and become a star and learn how to play properly within a team concept and then come back to the NBA older, wiser and more in control ala Anthony Parker. If he can't crack the rotation this season I don't think he has a future on the Celtics. Bill Walker might have a similar fate, but he has shown certain qualities that lead you to believe that he can develop into a very very good super hustle role player(ala James Posey) that doesn't necessarily have to score to be effective. Even with his injuries, those qualities make it hard for the Celtics to let him go... Jr Giddens hasn't shown those same qualities.

So in conclusion, you haven't seen him at all this season.

Touche. I was thinking the exact same thing. Anthony Parker is a great a example how a borderline NBA player can learn the game in europe. However, i am not sure Giddens has Parker's basketball IQ. But who knows? he may even land here in Tel Aviv...

I'll be writing a front page article on this shortly, but in a word:  yes.

It depends on whether he shows the coaches and management he's worth keeping.  He doesn't necessarily need to get a lot of PT this year to earn the spot for next year.  He needs to show that he can produce what House, Daniels and/or Walker would deliver such that Danny feels he wouldn't need keep all 3 of them for next year.  TA's absense next year seems to be a foregone conclusion but Giddens has got to show he's as good as or better than those players higher on the depth chart.  He has a cheaper contract than House and Daniels will get next year (it will take more $ to resign both of them) so that's in his favor.

Looking at it from that point of view, I don't see him proving himself to the point where Danny would keep him instead of resigning House and Daniels.

I remember reading that the Celtics like his defensive potential.  If Tony Allen can be in the league for 6 years based on his defensive potential, surely JR can survive a few years.

Giddens is not an intelligent basketball player. He was lost when given minutes. Unless I see a drastic improvement this season, he probably won't have an NBA career beyond this year. I could be wrong though, and I hope I am.

Other than he was never given minutes. I can understand arguments people might make about coaches not thinking he might be ready to play on this level and such, but crap like "he was lost when given minutes" is complete nonsense as far as analyzing him as a player goes.

Uh what? Giddens didn't get minutes I'll agree, but the getting lost out there is a valid observation.

It has more weight when he's been given some considerable burn, Bill Walker for example, but its still valid.

Walker definitely looked lost out there, and they were putting him in instead of Giddens. So I'm not hopeful either will do anything other than provide for forum fodder this year.

Valid but ridiculous and lacks a lot of context, like him being inserted in garbage time where there's ZERO discipline by pretty much all involved. He had a game where he played 5 minutes of garbage time and that's pretty much it. Too low of a sample. Yet, for a guy who was lost he went 2/3 with an assist, 3 rebounds. Drawing conclusions from those few minutes, when there's a larger body of work in other stages, is ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.

have the coaches or management ever said anything positive about JR since they drafted him? the only line of defense i hear from folks here is that we haven't had a chance to see what he can do yet because he doesn't get minutes.

meanwhile, he was awful in summer league -- about as quick as mud with no handle and no jump shot. he tried so hard to impress, going to the hole every time, and yet it couldn't have been more clear that he doesn't have the game to get to the basket in the NBA. comparing him to tony allen is an insult to allen, who has far more athletic ability.

who's our back up PG this year? mario chalmers? oh no i forgot it's lester hudson. who's our 5th big this year, deandre jordan? oh no i forgot it's sheldon williams. who is our back up 3 this year, the fresh prince? coulda been. not one of danny's finer picks.....

Until I have seen him play a whole lot more, I am going to take Doc's giving him no playing time as a sign that he is just not showing in practice and team scrimmages that he is better than the guys that are in the rotation. I saw him some in Summer League and thought he forced things but I think he showed more than Walker did.

If he is released, I still think he might be able to stick in the league somewhere else. All that release is really saying is he isn't good enough to make the Celtics and doesn't fit into their long term plans. But NJ, OKC, Minny, GS, or Sactown might look at him as an upgrade to their 11th or 12th players and sign him.

I think he has a good chance of being off the celtics.  He hasn't shown me anything whereas Walker showed spark in his few minutes.  Some people were saying Giddens looked good in summer league but I didn't think he looked nba ready.  His contract will make him part of a trade or a cut if he doesn't show .  But where do his minutes come from?
He is behind Ray Allen who will play at least 30 minutes a night.  After him a sg, Eddie House and/or Daniels then Tony Allen.  I don't think he can give us minutes at sf, if he can then he has an opening with Walker down.  I see him in d league showing some nice #s and being traded.  If Ray resigns there is no place at all for giddens who again has to show nba skill level first.

Giddens will still be around next season, Tony Allen will be a goner.

Maybe.  Outside of Rondo and Perk, there's no youngster on the C's I'd be upset to see go.  And outside those two and BBD, there isn't any young player that I'd be shocked to see out of the NBA in a year or two.
