Part of the reason Sweetney is here might be because Doc wants to be able to rest KG and Wallace during the preseason, so an extra big to eat preseason minutes can be helpful.

No pun intended.

Williams and Daniels are disappointments?  Right...

Let's see Sweetney be guarded by someone other than Nesterovic.  Amir Johnson even would've eaten him up.  How about a double-team?  Please.

And he couldn't guard me.  There's no way he's making the team unless we trade in a 2 for 1 in a hurry.

Agreed.

Plus this upside talk is ridiculous. He's not going to lose that weight. He's been out of the league for a couple of years and doesn't bother to lose any weight when trying to get himself back in. I don't want him I'll take Shelden.
At least one person here is dealing with reality.  He's been fat for years and he's always going to be a blob.  I'm sure he's worked with mulitiple trainers, and gone on multiple diets.  He's not going to lose enough to be a legit player.  Its a problem with his mind not his diet plan and training regimen.

If Sweetney is capable of drawing double teams or elite defenders, wouldn't that spell trouble for opposing teams?

Let's not overstate the case.  An in-shape Sweetney's a legit NBA player, particularly on offense, but he's wasn't the kind of player that put those bags under Jeff Van Gundy's eyes.  As semi-impressive as his has been at times, he's no better an offensive player than BBD.

You say it like BBD is a bad offensive player, hell i'd say that BBD is pretty good. Now one thing i know is that Sweetney is DEFENITLY a better offensive option than Williams (who looks like crap to me.)

BBD *is* pretty good, but you don't see teams rushing to double him.  Put him in what I would expect to be a normal mid-season rotation with 'Sheed, House, Daniels, and either Pierce or Ray, and he's probably the fourth-best offensive player on the court.  They aren't leaving any of the other guys alone to double on BBD, they'd rather he shoot it than most of the other guys he's likely to be on the court with.

Sweetney's kinda the same deal, he's got skills down low but he's not SO good that he's going to be the one that the opposition is keyed in on stopping (and therefore opening up opportunities for other guys).

for the last time, Giddens CAN'T be cut, he is a first rounder and has a guaranteed 2 year deal, he can only be traded, that's the only way to move him out of the roster

He can be waived, they'd just have to eat his contract and it would still count against the cap. It would just free up a roster spot. Not saying they will, but they could.

If teams won't be key on stopping or double teaming Sweetney, then why don't we keep him, get him the ball, and let him score?  Surely he can score a few points off the bench againt other teams 2nd string?  It would be interesting to see him and Sheed play together. How would opposing coaches guard those guys?

Well, if you're proposing that we run our entire second-team offense through the big lug, who are you proposing get fewer shots?  'Sheed?  Eddie?  BBD?  Pierce or Ray or KG or whichever starters are still in the game?

I like Sweetney, if he's in shape he could help...  but c'mon, let's not get carried away.  He could be in the best shape of his career, and he'd still be, at best, the 10th man on this roster.

I'm pretty sure doc put Sweetney in early and often last night becasue they are about to make a decision on whether to let him go.  To his credit, he did have a nice low-post almost right away.  However, he got burned on the other end (just like the previous game) by a quicker player.

Beyond that, this team really doesn't need a primarily offensive player.  They need guys off the bnehc woh can defend, and Sweetney doesn't offer that.

Hopefully we'll see him again someday when he's in shape.

I really hope so. I want things to work out for him. His life shouldn't be derailed because of one tragedy.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Just throwing around nicknames for Sweetney.  Master Po came up with The Human Eclipse; to which I responded with the The Human Eclair.

I think it works.  :D

Yup

We should not run the whole offense of the second unit through Sweetney...that is an exaggeration.

If he has the talent for 10th man without trades or injuries, he could then, over time, make the second unit.

The point is, if we have a second string where there aren't any clunkers (we have clunkers now) that is a positive development.
