Can't believe it's been that long.  The Celtics almost lost their 3rd franchise player in less than 15 years.  I always found it a bit cryptic that each tragedy were all 7 years apart: Len Bias in 1986, Reggie Lewis in 1993 and Pierce in 2000.  Amazingly, Pierce is still standing.

Thanks for the link.  Very nice article.

I can't believe he's winding down his NBA career already.

Hard to think of the day Pierce retires. I've been watching him in Boston almost his entire career, I don't remember a lot of the earlier moments but I know he's always been an absolute joy to watch.

Thank God (and Tony Battie) that's Paul's still around today.

Nice article.  First time I saw a national media outlet posit that Pierce has a "good chance" of being in the HoF.  Can't say I disagree.  Good stuff.
God bless and good night!

Pierce, coming out of Kansas, was never seen as a "savior" type player.

I think his play and his career has actually been a surprise.

I think through hard work and determination, Paul turned himself into a franchise type player.

Pierce is the truest of Celtics, reps it for Boston.  Can anyone find a link to the game on March 13, 2001 where he was dubbed "The Truth" by Shaq after dropping 42 on the Lakers?  I'd love to see that ish

I remember having an awfully bleak feeling about the whole situation. Thankfully he made a full recovery.

I remember that season pretty vividly.

Paul turned into one of the most lethal scorers in the league and he did so in the crunch time to boot.

We, as Celtics fans already knew he was good as a rookie and getting better as a sophomore, but in that junior season he really put his name on the NBA league wide map.

Getting props from Shaq doesn't hurt either.

You don't think so?  I know that I was *very* psyched when Pierce fell to 10th.  He was projected as a top-3 pick, and then teams kept passing on him.  I absolutely expected great things out of him, probably more out of him than any pick in the past 15 years other than maybe Ron Mercer (who was a decent player, but never lived up to his potential).

Ya, he was projected to be a solid pro, like Carlos Boozer; the type of player who was solid out of college, very polished etc. but didn't have much upside.

I remember well the year Paul arrived to the NBA. It was the lockout season and my last stay in the United States. I was studying in a tiny college in Indiana and I was desperate to see the Celtics live at last... but I had to return to Spain in December, some weeks before the start of the 99 season :(

In any case, everybody talked about Paul Pierce in campus conversations. I've never followed college basketball much, so I asked people about Pierce in Kansas. Everybody kept saying that he really could play and that the C's would be a nice team for him...

Old times!!

Paul "Silverado" Pierce is his nickname in Spanish tv :p
