First the turn Gasol's contract dump into a more expensive, cancer no less, Zach Randolph.  Second they want to offer Iverson a contract where he will obviously want to start.  If they do start him they will limit the development of either Mike Conley Jr. or OJ Mayo.  They had a decent young core that was getting better as a group with Marc Gasol.  Now they are a cluster of me first players who all want to play.

They are just building their Laker farm team. I expect a Walton for AI trade by the All Star break

I feel for Lionel Hollins. I don't think he signed up for this. He's got to find a way to keep Randolph, AI, Mayo, and Rudy Gay all happy. [Reportedly, Mayo did lobby for Iverson, though, so at least one of those youngsters is OK with it.]

A lot of firepower there in that starting lineup (with Marc Gasol). It could pay off, or it could get ugly by the All-Star break if they aren't contending for a playoff berth.

New rules are in place, just for Memphis games.

They throw five basketballs out on the court, and have five individual one-on-one games going concurrently.  Whichever team wins the most one-on-one matchups wins the game.

Ins't that the best approach to Memphis Grizzlies basketball?

I think this is genius.  Who wouldn't want to pay to see AI and Randolph out there together with Gay and Mayo?  I would put the chances of Marc Gasol getting punched in the face by one of his teammates if he takes more than 5 shots in a game at about 45%.  That alone is worth the price of admission.

Ultimately though, I actually think there is a chance this could work out in the long-run for Memphis.  First, it will help them to keep the prices of Gay and Mayo down, while also teaching them both some humility.  Both of them have become complete chuckers, and I don't think it serves either of them well.  I think they both could really benefit from being forced into a more complimentary role.  If they can bring in a coach that will convince them that they can make a mark on this league by playing defense, and knocking down open jumpers, I think they both could eventually be championship-level 2nd or 3rd options.  If they continued to just give them the ball, and let them do what they want, I think they would just become the next Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison...and I don't mean that in a good way.

Just think though, if they could somehow brainwash Iverson to be a a team player; the Grizzlies would actually be a contender.

Iverson/Gay/Mayo/Randolph/M.Gasol is a frightening offensive squad
Practice? Whatchu talkin about practice?

They're thinking, "Hey, it sure would be nice to get some fans that don't dress up like empty seats every home game!"

That's really all there is to it.  They don't want him because he'll help them contend (though they'll probably get a little better), they don't want him to guide the young 'uns, they just want to sell tickets and jerseys and try to fill the sports vacuum that's been left by Calipari oozing his way out of town.  With the attendance figures they've had lately, I don't blame them.  AI will probably make them significantly more money than his salary, and maybe help start to build a local fan base for the long term.

What they're thinking of is that they got a very good player in Iverson for short change for one year. A no-brainer if I ever saw one.

Easy: with Iverson and Zach they will sell jerseys and the media will surely talk about the Grizzlies (which they seldom do now).

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

Hmmmm, a contender? I guess I don't see it. Yeah, they will be a little better this year, but unless something miraculous happens, they aren't even going to get a sniff of the playoffs...I see the Iverson move as a good move, though, because this really should bring in more fans...

Do people care about Iverson anymore, though?  He makes the team interesting for a game or two, but if they don't win attentance is still going to suck.  He sure wasn't drawing in the crowds in Detroit (granted, expectations were higher).  For a segment of the population, Iverson's a turnoff anyway, there are probably just about equal numbers of NBA fans (or potential NBA fans) who dislike his as like him.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Iverson is extremely popular, and the good majority enjoy watching him play.

I'm not sure I buy that.  Many do, many do not.  The people I talk with about the NBA, people who are perhaps more casual fans (the kinds of fans that you still need to attract to be a viable franchise) tend to dislike him and his style of play (many turned off the the NBA in general, in large part because they don't like watching one-on-one ballers like Iverson and Marbury).  If someone's a hardcore NBA fan, they probably like or appreciate Iverson, but that's not necessarily the majority of people who buy tickets.

The problem is that negative views about something/someone are always heard the loudest. It just doesn't represent the majority... they simply make more noise. There's a reason Iverson has been a 10 time all-star, and just last year with his crappiest season ever, he was voted in as a starter.
