Per Reiss' Pieces (http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/ )
The Patriots waived Kevin O'Connell.  He was supposed to be the  #2 backup QB, so the Pats are looking very very thin at that position... (currently they have Andrew Walter and Brian Hoyer).  Didn't Edelman play QB?  I wonder if he could be a backup.

Ya it does stink in the sense that we probably could have done alot better drafting somebody else, but at least in football you can just cut your losses and get rid of players that you dont think will be adding anything to your team.

It is a shame to waste such a high pick, but 3rd rounders wash out all the time.  I think it is a tribute to the number of quality player this team has on the roster that he is being let go so early in his career.  There are going to be a lot of talented guys being cut by the Pats this year.

After the way he played against the Redskins he should have been shot.  Merely putting him on waivers was far too kind.

I dunno, at the same time Cassel played really really bad in the preseason last year, he turned out to be pretty decent.

I too suspect that... But who is the veteran going to be?

Leftwich is turrible.  Not sure about Garcia though...but he seems a bit old.

I actually think Walter could be a decent backup for this team.  He has a very good arm, and supposedly is picking up on the system quickly.  He also has some starting experience.

who is it a tribute to in their QB rotation? you think he was cut because he's anything other than terrible, or because the other back-ups are so good?

I dont think Leftwhich is turrible.  the dude can drop back and throw with the best of them if he has a good offensive line.  Kind of a poor mans bledsoe, but as a backup not a bad solution.

Sorry, didn't mean it is a tribute to the QB rotation, but to the depth of the team in general.  Like I said in the last post, I think Walter can be a decent backup QB in this league.

I also think Edelman allows them to carry only 2 true QB's on the active roster, with Julian being the emergency QB, who will also see a lot of time on special teams.  Then they will have Hoyer on the practice squad.

By carrying only 2 true QB's on the active roster, it will allow them to make room for an extra guy elsewhere, whether it be a RB (Green-Ellis?), reciever, lineman, or someone on defense (where they need to keep a lot of depth IMO).

I dont think Leftwhich is turrible.  the dude can drop back and throw with the best of them if he has a good offensive line.  Kind of a poor mans bledsoe, but as a backup not a bad solution.

Well, I just don't see it.  In his prime, he was like you said, but he has fallen apart the last few years.  Not to mention, the last thing this team and their system need is a guy like Bledsoe.  I was a huge fan of him, but he is the exact opposite of the kind of guy who thrives in this system.

I love Jeff Garcia, I think he's the most underrated QB of the past twenty years, but I don't think he would have come here.  He wants to start; he signed in Oakland to be JaMarcus Russell' backup, but let's be realistic...  he's backing up JaMarcus Russell.  He'll be starting by week 6, JaMarcus is HORRIBLE and doesn't even try to get better.  I don't think Garcia was likely to sign here when he had a 0% chance of getting any playing time short of a Brady injury.

Has Edelman been getting ANY reps at QB, though?  Obviously he hasn't been behind center in any preseason games, and Belichick does prevent the media from reporting on a lot of "unusual" stuff they practice, but you'd think there would at least be SOME mention of him getting some snaps under center at some point.  I can't recall him ever being discussed with the other QBs, although it's hard to imagine BB not at least thinking about this.

I am sure he is not getting many fewer reps at QB than Troy Brown did when he was the emergency QB.

I just think BB really likes going with only 2 QB's, since he probably feels that any 3rd QB is terrible anyways, so might as well have someone filling that role who can help the team in other ways.
