I know with the lack of any NBA news during this mundane off-season, the thought or sight of a situation like this, people dive in head first into discussion with out thinking thoroughly.  Stephen Jackson is definitely one of the better players in the league, but lets look at his game overall. Jax is a ball-stopper on offense. Celtics already have one is name is Paul Pierce. Now if Jax were to somehow miraculously arrive in Boston, and was willing to play a role-players role well then thats a different story, but since he's been in Oakland, offensively he takes to many dribbles and takes to long to make a move or take a shot.

GSW runs a more open gym type of offense, with little to no structure, where as Phx runs (or ran) a run-and-gun style with a rhythm and some structure, so S. Jackson was GSW option if they couldn't get any thing in transition or off a fast break, and with that he would never pass the ball while in a half-court setting.

I live in Indiana, and when he was playing for the Pacers he did the same thing, not as often as he does now but enough to where he didn't have the best reputation on the court as well as off the court from the fans perspectives.

So all im tryna say is, he wouldnt fit into what the celtics do  b/c we already have PP.

Do you think Golden state would rather take back long contracts of medicore players or take expiring contracts of medicore players. I'd go with the later. It's not like they are going to compete and with the economy doing so poorly why not save some money to get rid off an unhappy player?

West and Varajeo are useful players.

Scalabrine and Allen are not.  They aren't even mediocre.

He's got the talent, but his attitude isn't very "ubuntu". I'd say no to him

This is interesting, but not unexpected news.
A few thoughts:
(1) Steve Jackson is often underrated because of his bad boy attitude (sim. to Artest).  By all accounts, other than the recent trade request, he has redeemed himself with the GSW.
(2) Wherever he goes he will want to start, so I don't see him headed to Boston (because the Cs will not trade Ray Allen for him).
(3) From a purely basketball p.o.v., I would like to see the Knicks work out a S&T involving SJax and Nate Robinson (I would love to watch Nate and Monta Ellis run up and down the court).
Celtics fan for life.

I'm sorry, but I am still laughing at "I want a chance to win a title" followed by "I want to play in NY"

I wouldn't touch Stephen Jackson with a 10 ft pole and add a few more feet if you're thinking about trading him for Ray Allen.  4 more years at 35 million.. I'll pass with extreme prejudice.

He's also not a great defender and shoots way too many 3's oh and he's crazy.

Due to his contract, age, questionable character + past indiscretions ... I'll be amazed if Golden State gets anything more than an expiring contract and a low level to mediocre prospect in return for Stephen Jackson.

For that reason, the low price tag, Stephen Jackson could end be the title decider. If he goes to an elite team, he could suddenly turn someone into the #1 team in the league.

He would want to go play with Al and is probably expect New York to sign a marquee free-agent next year... Maybe two therefore thinking that they will be contenders not this year but from the 2010-2011 season until he retires.

I agree.  I think he would be very useful if we ended up against any team with a big 2 guard who can post up Ray.  He would be an excellent option for guarding Lebron, Kobe, Joe Johnson and Vince Carter.  Plus he can play the 3 in case of an injury.  If we had Jackson and Sheed last year we probably would have made the Finals.  Probably even just with Sheed.

Backup SF is our one weakness right now.  If we picked up Jackson we'd have the best backup 3 in the league, along with the best backup 4-5(Sheed) in the league and one of the best backup 2s(Daniels).

I think some are seriously underestimating just how good Stephen Jackson is. Someone said the ball stops in his hands?!?! He had 6.5 assists per game last year. He was one of four guys with LeBron, Wade and Paul to average 20+PPG, 6+APG, and 5+RPG. He is an above average defender and has great leadership qualities in him. He comes to play and wants to win as bad as any player in the league.

I think he gets a little too much of a bad rep because of his past weirdness but Jackson in his current state, is one of the best players in this league. Our cast offs(Scal, Tony, Walker, Giddens, Eddie) will never, ever, ever be enough to land him here. GS might have to move him, but they aren't going to give away the heart and soul of their team.

I could definitely see Dallas giving up the human bong, Josh Howard for Jackson and I could see where a move like that could be enough to suddenly make them a serious title contender once again out West.

A Kidd/Jackson/Marion/Dirk/Dampier starting five with a bench of Terry/Gooden/Barea/Singleton/Ross/Carroll is going to scare the hell out of some teams out West.

HAHAHA...funny how you looked at his stats.......yes he did avg 6.5 asst. which is not hard and doesn't take a lot of effort to rack up assist in that system in GSW. By the way since you are looking at his stats, go ahead and peak over at that category titled "TO" turnovers, and tell me what you see, cause when i looked at it i could have sworn it was almost 4 TURNOVERS per game!

TP for pointing out his TO issues.

But I do agree with Nick that Stephen Jackson can easily be the difference between two contenders for the title. He was huge for the Spurs during one championship season. No reason he couldn't repeat that performance.

He has his warts, but he's a very effective player on both ends. Just don't count on him to keep it together for the whole length of his deal. I don't see the C's making a move for him.

Jackson also shot 41% from the field, 34% from three point range, and has had a true shooting percentage of 53-54% for the past three years. So his scoring efficiency is fairly mediocre.

On top of that, he's been a below average defender for the past two seasons. Not because of a lack of defensive ability, but because of the huge minutes he's piling up (40 a game) and the large offensive role.

In other words, the large minutes + large role are padding his stat line (per game stats) in a major way but even with that he has serious issues with turnovers (led the league in TOs), scoring efficiency and defense. Jackson's rebounding is also very poor for a small forward and mediocre for a two guard.

Still, he'd be a very nice player in a smaller role (fourth or fifth best player on a team) ... one that he could manage to better effect.

I want him here! I want him here bad! I don't think it would take Ray to get him. Scal, TA and Giddens for him, if you're Danny you have to at least ask. Him, Marquis, Baby, Rasheed and a vet PG is a starting lineup on some teams, and that would be our bench.
