Meh, give it a chance.  Do you think the sox would have gotten him if they didnt think he could help?

I guess otherwise they must just want to put him through arbitration for draft picks
In 2007 they got Eric Gagne thinking he would help.

Wasn't the worst decision in the world, pretty solid risk that fired up the rest of the bullpen. I also think Wagner has more in the tank than Gagne.

You can bring up Gagne, but everybody at the time thought it was the move that put that team over the top, and loved that move.  It didnt work out, but I would do that trade again every time.  It was the right trade to make even though it didnt work out.  If you have the opportunity to add a guy like Gagne, or Wagner you do it.

Sean McAdam says its Chris Carter and a insignificant prospect going to the Mets. I like it, Carter was never going to play here outside of being called up for DL stints and such.

Quote
According to a source with knowledge of the Red Sox acquisition of left-handed reliever Billy Wagner from the Mets, one of the players dealt to New York for the 38-year-old is Pawtucket outfielder/designated hitter Chris Carter.

According to the source, the other player dealt away to the Mets is a prospect “not of significance"

Anybody else extremely impressed with what they have seen before?  I thought he could be good, but he has really been lights out.  And those strikeouts coming from a lefty could be huge in NY in October

He's been awesome and is somewhat messing up my case that the AL is a much better league than the NL.

I hope it's putting the pressure on Papelbon to perform.

I think the NL vs AL thing isnt really applicable to relievers, especially closers.  Wagner as a closer in the NL would never pitch against another pitcher, also he would probably see a good ammount of pinch hitters.  I think the NL vs AL argument is really applicable to starters only who face a very weak bottom three on a regular basis.  Also it could work for us in that Wagner is a lifetime NL player and usually the first time a pitcher faces a hitter the pitcher has the advantage

Wagner has already proven to be unaccountably more valuable to this year's run for the championship than Gagne was in 2007. I'm not sure Gagne actually pitched three straight scoreless innings at any point in 2007.

That's a [dang] good question Budweiser. I remember him getting a couple of losses. I remember him having some ungodly WHIP and ERA(1.86 and 6.75 respectively, I looked them up) and I remember him seemingly getting the first two outs and then giving up runs in nearly every outing, though that might be an exaggeration, maybe.

looks like he had a few  ;)

he actually had a decent run at the end of the season to get our hopes up (though I seem to recall they were mopup type stuff, then he got thrown into an emergency situation in extra innings vs Cleveland in the playoffs...and...ugghh)

With the Mets he had 2 scoreless innings in 2 appearances.

Don't be fooled guys, that's all an illusion.

Anyways, I'm very happy to have Wagner here and I hope he puts pressure on Papelbon to perform. Over the last two season or so, I've been a bit disappointed in the sense that I don't see him having clean innings as often as I would expect for a guy of his talent level.
