I know this may not be popular around here considering young Gabe was just waived, but maybe we should find a young cheap PG with promise and groom him as a backup.  Why?

The PG free agent pool is pretty slim this year and none of the PG's fit our bill (as far as height, defense and scoring punch) so why bother, if we have House and Marquis Daniels and we only need a backup for 10 minutes a game tops.  Much like most Quarterbacks aren't ever starters most PG's are career backups. So can't we find a young player with promise and some of the attributes mentioned above as a backup?  I don't think any of the the vet backup experiments (Marbury,Cassell) have yielded any improvement over Eddie House.  So maybe we should go for young PG's

 Like:

Sun Yue (recently waived by the Lakers, hasn't played much NBA ball)
Mardy Collins (must be traded for)
Marcus Williams (just signed by Memphis but a good floor general)

and I'm note even saying these guys particularly but somebody like this.  OR even someone mid-career who could be considered a young vet like:

Hinrich, Blake or Duhon (of course all these guys have inflated contracts we'd have to trade for) but I'm over signing for some older vet who is not gonna give us any more than House.

I think we should find a backup PG who can play NBA basketball.  It doesn't matter if he is 23 or 43 if he can play.  They are not rebuilding, the only thing that matters right now is this year.

How about Lester Hudson he's pretty cool/available to be signed.

He had a quadruple double in college and has shown the ability to score/rebound in very large bunches.

The main problem of getting a real primary back-up is pairing him up with House, which we know will happen. Few have the size necessary to make it an effective back-court on both sides of the ball. As it is, we're better off with a player that is comfortable in the 3rd stringer role behind House.

I don't think we should sign guys b/c they're cool, or else we'd have this cat at power forward, he is so freaking cool:

We don't need scoring in the second unit. Sheed, Daniels, and House provide more than enough firepower. What we need is someone who can distribute the ball and set up the offense. Someone like Stephon Marbury is a better fit (yea i said it...)

Lester Hudson looked good in the summer league, showing flashes scoring the ball. But his passing skills as well as true point guard skills are questionable as of now.

The fact that Pruitt was waived should tell you that a young point guard is not what the Celtics are looking for. End of story.

Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Some people are overly concerned with the height of a potential backup point guard.  This is a team that had short guys like Leon Powe, Glen Davis, and Eddie House make solid contributions off the bench last year.

I see posts that worry about pairing a short point guard with Eddie House, who makes for an undersized shooting guard.  However, by adding Rasheed Wallace and Sheldon Williams you no longer have an undersized front court behind them on the defensive end.

The main features that the Celtics should be looking for in a point guard are those facets of the job which Eddie House isn't so good at.

Trouble with a young pg for backing up rajon is:
generally young guys can't come in with limited minutes and produce much, a vet can come in for 10 minutes and know there role and perform it/ not try and over do it to get the coach's eye
too many young players are not defensively sound, our backup pg needs to come in and be steady on offense but definately play good d
I honestly LOVE the idea of Hinrich.  Backup either guard spot, yes I'd move eddie if he came to team.  I love eddie but it would make a better team, guy has range, good defender, more size, good team player and can easily be our starting pg or sg if needed.  I think we have enough trade chips left that a good vet can be found (probably not hinrich though)

Didn't we just waive a young PG that was backing up Rondo?? Seems to me I remember a guy named Gabe Pruitt playing behind Rondo.

Just sign Marbury.

Just sign Marbury.
I would be very afraid that he would borrow his cousin's girlfriend's gun and go postal on the team if he doesn't get minutes after watching some of that podcast. Dude's bizarre. Best to let the Lakers get him.

The fact is that Pruitt was never really a point guard to begin with. He was a 2 that they were trying to convert into a 1. I don't know that it's a matter of age. I think what the Celtics need is a true, pass first shoot secong type to back up Rondo. I wouldn't say just because Pruitt didn't work out it couldn't be someone young. I mean Rose, Rondo, CP all all pretty young, yet they are pretty good point guards. I don't see how getting rid of Pruitt means that they won't sign someone else just because they are around his age.
