  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
I wonder if something is wrong behind the scenes that we don't know about with Leon that has led to this "We have no interest in bringing back Leon Powe, we are moving on!" message and attitude that the Celtics front office has been sending out all summer? It seems strange to me that Doc comes out every chance he gets and praises Leon but they didn't even want to extend him the courtesy of a small contract while he rehabs.

I wonder if the agent said or demanded something that didn't sit well or if the C's medical experts advised against signing him or if Leon just isn't the saint we all think he is and he has alienated himself out of an opportunity to return.

The whole situation with Leon just seems way to Belichickian to me and that hasn't been this franchise's history. Strange.

There is no chance that the Celtics would re-sign Powe, or match any offer, said another source. The team has made it clear that it is moving on, despite Powe's helping the Celtics immensely during their Finals series victory over the Lakers and Coach Doc Rivers's lobbying on his behalf. Rivers said during the playoffs that he hoped the team could find some way to keep Powe, a restricted free agent. But to do so, the already tax-paying Celtics would have to shell out an additional $5 or $6 million in salary and luxury taxes for a player they also aren't sure will be able to play. NBA.com

I really wanted to resign Powe to a small contract to give him time to return then see if he still can produce and resign him to larger contract next year. But it looks like Ainge doesn't want his name tarnished by not producing MULTIPLE championships with the Big 3's declining time frame. Powe is good, but we need someone on the court NOW and Powe supposedly wants to get paid now even though he just suffered a career effecting injury. I hope Powe and his agent come to their senses and he comes back.

I have my doubts about that report, only because it is an exact rehash of things already reported weeks ago in the Globe and Herald.

The only new part is the "additional $5 or $6 million in salary and luxury taxes" part, which sounds ridiculous; what team is going to give Powe $2.5 to $3 million?

Agree. We need him especially at playoff time & he should be back by then.

What other FA are available worth signing if we don't get Leon (excluding Bowen)?

I'm on board with a minimum 2 year deal at the team's option. If he demands more, then we need to look under other rocks.

Seeing Leon in Cavs uniform or even seeing him sitting in Cavs bench will be a very awful sight for us.
Get that 18th banner ready!

The NBA..where "this whole sport is a business and the referees decide games and David Stern is a snake and is only in this for the money" happens.

what big are you going to sign at this point for a minimum contract that is better than Leon?

Stromile Swift - SOME mid range game, GREAT dunker and shot blocker
Melvin Ely - Same game as Powe
Juwan Howard - Good enough to play 5th big 5-10 mins a game
Joe Smith - Might want more than vet min but still possible

So YES, there are better PF/Cs out there than Powe that want to play for less than 2-3 mil for only 20-30 games.
Can't stop, Rondo!

I agree that he deserves a contract, but the majority think that a team wont give him more than the min to play part of the season and come back with less explosiveness. Although if we did sign him to 2-3mil with team option next year...

Rondo, House
Ray, Daniels, Giddens          Trade Tony Allen for ANY PG or SG
Pierce, (Bowen) BWalker
KG, BBD, ,Scalabrine, Powe
Perk, Sheed
Can't stop, Rondo!

I personally don't think any of them are better than Leon Powe. Leon is a hard worker, he is a TOUGH guy. Despite his injuries, I still want him back, call me dumb, but I prefer him over Big Baby.
Anything is possible!!!

Agree that Leon is a hard worker, a tough guy, and I still want him back. I'll also be sick (or if there's a stronger word) to see him play against us. Let's get something worked out and get this one DONE!

Of the list of other options, Joe Smith would be only one I'd think about considering.

That's about it. Cost is WAY too high for the risks involved. People are going to have to turn loose of this one. It's not practical at all to bring Powe back, and he's not coming back.

At first, I thought that I would be OK if Leon signed with another team because I want to see him succeed, even if he isn't playing for the C's but it would really bug me to see him play for the Cavs... I hate this team and I would hate even more to see Leon play against us in the playoffs so I hope that he re-signs someday with us (though very unlikely) or that he signs with a team other than the Cavs (or Lakers).

But first of all I wish him a good recovery.

Leon Powe on the Cavs is my worst nightmare.  I want to see this guy succeed more than anything but seeing the Lebrons lose is right up there.  I hate Lebron and I hate Ohio.

Valid points, but then why is CLE is about to offer him and we aren't?
Because Danny Ferry < Danny Ainge.  Simple really.
