Peavy to White Sox
again
Only reason it didn't happen before was Peavy's trade veto. Weird that he'd change his mind at this point, oh well.

Peavy to White Sox
I guess Peavy decided that the White Sox weren't so bad after all.

That one sneaked in quietly.
Yup

I think Adam LaRoche is the new Will Solomon...
Adam at least took the field for the Red Sox...

Good point.  Regardless, this deal makes no sense.
Meh if a player isn't going to be on the field much, do you really want him to be ****ed off about it? If their production is close why wouldn't you get a guy who's happy to come off the bench.

Only problem is that we seem to have a minor logjam on the bench with 3 potential 1B.  How will Martinez and Varitek split PT?
I think Kotchman will be on the bench most of the time, with Youk at third.

Not sure how much Victor will catch.

Francona is definitely going to have his hands full. good thing keeping players loose and happy is one of his specialties because lots of guys are getting less PT with these additions.

Question: when Wake comes back does Kottaras catch him and if so then are we really going to run three catchers....not sure how i feel about that.

I am underwhelmed.

The Sox add a player who will be splitting time between Catcher, first base and DH.

They also add a player who will be splitting time between first base and DH.

This means that their two strongest batters right now (Youk and Lowell) are now going to be pushed out or aside from their primary positions.

This means The Sox now have 3 catchers or 2 if Koteras is demoted and if that's the case it'll be 2 who can't catch Wakefield.

This leaves holes in right and short and a gaping hole in the #3 position in the rotation.

So the Sox added two key players who are redundant and didn't address their key need pitching.  What gives?

According to the NY Post he has NOT been traded. Got that of boston.com's coverage.

Who knows, but he's on the DL right now. I can see why the Sox wouldn't want that. They already have enough pitchers who are hurt.

I am not crazy about Victor Martinez, but they really didnt give up much for him.  Masterson was what he was, I dont think he was every really going to be much better then we saw.  Hagadone has potential, some very real potential, but you need to give stuff to get stuff.  Price has sucked since he was drafted.

Kotchman doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but they needed to get rid of laroche and kotchman makes about 5 million less then laroche so at least the sox save some cash. (edit: Kotchman is under team control till 2011, so they get a pretty decent player for the next couple of years for a guy they needed to get rid of, not bad at all).  and Kotchman is MUCH better defensively than Laroche...

And since when is Lowell a top offensive player?  he is basically done.  he will also need regular rest the entire rest of the way, since his hip is such a mess.

and as for 3 catchers, Victor is better then Tek and Kotteras, so that deosnt matter

all in all, a good day for theo and the sox.

martinez is about the best catcher that could be had for the price. he is a right handed bat, which the sox need. and he plays 1st base and can play for 3-5 more years.

the biggest sox problems were defense on the left side of the infield and catching. with martinez playing 1st youk moves to third and the creaky corpse of lowell can either rest or DH.

or...

martinez catching 1/2 the games the sox hitting increases and tek gets rest. i am not worried too much about losing tek's supposed pitch-calling. tek could still call a game from the bench, or else tito could.

for helping solve these problems the sox gave up very little. i have no trouble with giving quality to get quality, and the sox gave up some good prospects, but no great ones.....

masterson - good, but cant get lefties out, at least this year.

hagadone - could be very good...if his arm stays attached. but he is 2-3 years away from the bigs and is 23 right now. hate to see a u dub player go though. sigh.

price - he is about the 6-7th pitching prospect for the sox, tops.

best of all...theo helped the sox and still kept ellsbury, buchholtz, bard, kelly, and westmoreland.

finally, flipping laroche for kotchman is fine too. kotchman plays great defense, is a so-so hitter, but will be a nice bench player to back up 1st base.

good job theo!

Interesting day around the league.

It's a good thing there are a lot of teams in contention this year or there would have some pretty disgusting fire sales going on.  There still might be some of that in August when guys clear waivers.
Yup
