I would be in favor of signing Williams. He played pretty well right up until his retirement.

For what it's worth, and I can't verify whether it's true, but Williams said last week the reason for his retirement was that his wife was pregnant and "it wasn't going smoothly." Most likely a convenient excuse for not wanting to play with the Clippers, but that's his rationale.

I think he'd be a competent guy to bring in and really good to have in case of emergency.

If that's true, I feel like a Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. for questioning his motives.

Well, I was a full supporter of bringing back Marbury prior to this recent series of public self-destructions. There is no way the team is going to sign him now. Clearly we should put that thought out of our minds.

So Williams seems like a decent choice for Rondo, whol will play huge minutes anyway. He's no better or worse than the other scrap heap options..

If Daniels is going to occupy the backup 2/3 and House the backup 1/2, Williams could get some minutes at the 1. Like 5 a game. Then see how he progresses over the season and eventually give him a bigger role if he contributes.

He can't be worse than Starbury, right?

Oh, I wouldn't say that.  For all his troubles shooting, Marbury was actually decent running the offense and playing defense.  The problems came from him not being able to hit the broadside of a barn with his perimeter shots.  Since Williams was always a significantly worse shooter than Marbury (especially from midrange), even in their prime, I would not assume he would be any better after the missed time.

Williams is also a couple years older than Marbury, and has likely lost even more of a step.

So yes, Williams could in fact be worse than Marbury was.

Eating Vaseline in front of hundreds of thousands of people isn't exactly demonstrating that you want a new contract. I highly doubt the Celtics are still interested in Marbury. I guess I should have made it more clear in the original post that I was operating under the assumption that Marbury isn't coming back.
In his defense, he thought Vaseline eating would help his throat. Crazy medical beliefs are common all over the place, whether it be homeopathy, praying for the sick, or chiropractors giving medical advice.

Yeah, it's supposed to be an old home remedy.  Don't know if it works though.

I agree with this thought. I actually kind of like the idea of Daniels and House playing most to all of the backup guard minutes - Daniels actually has good handle, not enough to be a real point guard but I think he and House can handle those duties together, Daniels can guard 2s, House's shot makes Daniels' lack of an outside game less of a problem. However, I don't like either to step in and run the point if we really need somebody in case of any injuries to Rondo. I'd like Williams for that role, particularly, even if he only plays a few minutes a game regularly. And as he ramps up during the season, maybe he can crack the regular rotation (especially if Daniels can play at the 3, which I still have doubts about).

I think he's our best option now, considering Marbury's time is clearly done.
Go Celtics.

I'd rather have Marbury, but he's preoccupied with his "reality show." :-\

I don't think Marbury has scared us away. It's summer, he's just having fun. He can also be serious at times, as shown in the stream. We know who he is and what he brings. The minimum offer will still be on the table; it's up to him.

But in case he won't re-join us, Williams could be a very interesting option. Come on. Rondo's going to play close to 40 a night, and how many games has he missed the last two years? 7? Big deal! If he gets hurt, Williams should do fine in those couple of games.

And by the way, Williams is washed up and injury-prone? What? Maybe he has some injury problems, but we took a chance on Miles last season, who hadn't played in 2 years. J-Will just quit for family reasons. He was physically able to play.

So if Marbury doesn't re-sign, it's a no-brainer to sign him.
