Simmons Leaving ESPN the Magazine?

In his recent article he is talking about when to end things and relates it to his father's retirement.  quote:

To further close the circle: I'm retiring from this space in ESPN The Magazine after seven happy years. Like my father and his superintendency, The Magazine was never an ideal match for me -- I hate advance deadlines and word counts -- and yet, I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. It's just time for me to try some new things, that's all. And you have to know when it's time. I learned that from my father.

I wonder what is next?

Simmons and ESPN have been clashing for years now, but he's locked into a pretty lengthy contract, if I recall correctly.  I think he'll be pretty happy to leave, although I'm not sure anywhere else would pay him as well.

He's just leaving the mag, not the website. My favorite Simmons moments are during football season when he has his weekly football picks column. He usually does worse than his wife, but they are still very entertaining.

He´s no Steve Weinman, but he has talent, and you can´t go wrong with him for the vet minimum.

You may be right about the herald thing.  But I think I remember him holding a slight grudge and criticizing the Boston Globe writers as being old guys who weren't in touch with current times in sports and stuck in their ways.  Maybe I'm imagining all that, but I have some memory of him having problems with them from his time interning there.  The grudge could be true and have no connection to him working there however because I don't have any base for these accusations I'm making.

Either way, you're on TP number 1111!  How does that make you feel Don?  Would it throw your universe into flux if I gave you one more in an effort to destroy your consistency?

I think Simmons' point about the Globe (and I believe there is a valid grudge there) is that he feels that the sports page is filled with "crusty, old men".  He lamented the fact that the columnists are essentially the same now as they were 20-25 years ago.  A columnist basically has to die for a replacement to get in there so there is no fresh faces or perspectives in the sports page.  They could've very well stiffed him too when he first when jobhunting.  I know he talks about the "Golden Age" of the Globe Sports section quite often.  (Fitzgerald, Montville, McDonough, Gammons, etc.)

To be honest, I hadn't even thought about 1111.  Not sure if it has a special connotation or not that I should be aware.

No, no special connotation to 1111.  Just a lot of TP's and I tend to notice stuff like that, dates and times that all have the same number.  I was born on 8/3/83 and have always been strangely fascinated by that stuff.

Yeah, August birthdays are very cool.  My mom's is a day before mine which is nice because we can celebrate together (and because I can never forget her birthday, haha.)

I remember hating that my birthday was during the summer when I was a little kid though.  The kids with birthdays during the school year always got to celebrate in school and when my birthday came around most of my friends were gone on vacation.

Of course now that stuff doesn't matter anymore and I love having my b-day fall where it does on the calendar.  Its always nice weather and fun to celebrate (though birthdays in general don't mean as much to me as when I was a kid.)


None the less, our birthdays are coming up!!!
