Rumored proposal: davis, pruitt and giddnes for maxiel and first rounder

Glen “Big Baby’’ Davis, the Celtics’ restricted free agent forward, is being courted by New Jersey according to a report last night on yahoo.com sports.

The website, citing a league source, said the Nets still have their midlevel exception available and are wading through a group a power forwards including Lamar Odom, Drew Gooden, and Davis.

The team also is interested in acquiring Carlos Boozer, whom the Jazz are trying to unload.

Other possible suitors for Davis include the Pistons, Hornets, and Trail Blazers.

The yahoo.com report indicated the Pistons offered a sign-and-trade deal that would have sent Davis, J.R. Giddens, and Gabe Pruitt to Detroit in exchange for Jason Maxiell and a first-round pick but the Celtics declined.

i thought i read yesterday that it was declined by detroit. but today's report states otherwise..

i personally would have done this deal. what do you guys think?

I could see either version being true. The Celtics probably don't want a contract as big as Maxiel's. The Pistons might not want to give up a pick to get a player of roughly the same quality plus two marginal prospects.

I'd seriously think about that deal because I think Detroit is going to be a really bad team next year. Their pick could easily be a lottery one.

Maxiell fits better in the frontcourt with Rasheed who likes to drift outside. Maxiell rebound and blocks shots which is a bigger need then another jump shooting power forward.

We're better off not doing it. We're better off with Giddens and Davis than with Maxiel and a pick. Detroit's pick next year won't be as good as many think it will be.

If the Daniels sign and trade that would send Walker away doesn't go through, then I might consider this. But I think Walker and Giddens can both be useful players, and low cost.

I really think it's Maxiell's salary that might be holding up Ainge on this one.  5 million isn't a ton of money, but like Davis, Maxiell isn't a starter (or arguably even the first big off the bench) on a championship team.  I bet Ainge is thinking that he can get Davis at 2-3 million, get similar production, and save the team some dough (remember, they don't have to pick up Pruitt's option). 

And while I'd buy the argument that Maxiell's talents might be a better fit, I'd also question how much it's going to matter if KG, Perk, and Wallace are all playing a minimum of 30 mpg.  It's probably not worth the difference in salary for what will transpire only over 5-10 mpg at best.

If it's true that Danny turned that down, then I'm p---ed.  Besides the fact that I think Maxiel is a more valuable player on the Celtics due to what he brings, a first round pick is a very valuable commodity.  In fact, BBD alone is not worth a 1st round pick from a potentially bad team.

BBD's value was when he was producing at a rookie salary.  As a franchise you need to have some degree of a revolving door so that you get fresh & hungry blood in that is inexpensive.  The money you save there is to pay for veterans and nich role players.  I really hope Danny reconsiders, not to mention he'd be ridding himself of some players who aren't good enough to play in the nba (pruitt etc.)

Maxiel is like a bigger, better, healthier version of what powe brough to the table...he is a strong man, and he's scrappy too. i would have done that deal without asking any quesions. dump some trash, save some money, and get a viable young big and a first rounder? that's a no brainer deal right there.

I'd be more apt to side with Spears than Dell'Apa. It looks like Dell'Apa's source was Spears in the first place, but Frank says that the Celtics turned it down, so he either heard new information or he is getting it wrong.

Read the article, Dell'Apa was actually citing Spears' article as the source of the rumor...he was just misquoting it, not trying to refute it.

The problem, again, and the reason it isn't a no-brainer, is because of his salary.  He gets paid 5 million a year for the next 3 years, plus he has a player option for the 4th year, which he'll likely take.  1) That likely goes beyond the timeline Danny wants to have contracts on the books and 2) how does Danny justify paying 5 million dollars a year to a guy who likely won't see more than 5-10 mpg in the regular season and probably even less than that in the playoffs? 

I really think that Danny thinks that he can get Davis at half of that, cut Pruitt, and save the C's a few million.  And while Maxiell may be a slight upgrade, now much is that going to matter in 5-10 mpg?

Glad Ainge turned it down. Its just cheaper to re-sign Glen. Maxiel is seriously overpaid ($5mil for the next 4 years).
