Paul Pierce could opt out of his contract to sign for a lower rate (and save us money to get other players around him)

PP has piled up quite a few Bird Years (his whole career) If Paul opts out and becomes a Free Agent will he lose all those years? or would they stay becuase he stayed here?

If he opts out, we still have his Bird rights.

However, I really don't see it happening.

I think it is unnecisary.  If a FA wants to come to Boston, the Celtics will have to work out a sign and trade using either Ray Allen (likely on a high money, short term contract) or Pierce.
