Earl Watson waived by OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY, July 17, 2009 – The Oklahoma City Thunder waived guard Earl Watson it was announced today by Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti.

The 8-year NBA veteran appeared in 68 games (18 starts) with Oklahoma City this past season and averaged 6.6 points, 5.8 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 26.1 minutes per contest.

Watson, a 6-1 guard out of UCLA, holds career averages of 7.3 points, 4.6 assists, 2.2 rebounds in 597 career games (156 starts) with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Denver Nuggets, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Seattle Supersonics.

What do you guys think as Watson as our backup PG..I always thought he was a hard nosed guard who is a solid defender, shooter, and passer.Much better than Tyron Lue,I heard Ainge was targeting him.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat if he would come. That would push Pruitt  back to third where he can try and grow a little more. Welcome. Here's a TP for you!

Still draws a paycheck from OKC, perhaps he'll sign for the LLE.

I find this SHOCKING that OKC waived Watson. IMO, he's a borderline starter in the NBA and a good defender.

I would LOVE to add him for the LLE (though we have a bigger need at SF).

  Wasn't this his 3rd team since he signed his contract? Whoever signed him to that deal (Denver maybe?) was trying to dump him in the 1st year of that deal. There's got to be a reason.

perhaps it's due to the fact that they are a young team and he is an aging player that wants a chance to win? who knows, but i would think we would have heard more about this if there were any problems behind the scenes, stuff usually comes out eventually

I'm surprised by this move.  Definitely worth a look as a backup PG.

ditto. he's a solid player in the last year of his deal. musta been a buyout. in any case i'd be very happy to have him back-up rondo.

I agree. At 6.6 pts and 5.8 assists per game there is no question he can run the point. Sign him up DA! Forget Lue. He's a bum.

If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, the rumors I always heard about Watson revolved around his ego being bigger than his talent and he wanted to be "the man" at pg and didn't handle it well when he wasn't. Otherwise he could be a decent backup on a good team. I also was shocked he was cut (versus traded) until I remembered his ego issue.

Too diminutive to play along side Eddie, IMO. We need a back up PG with size defensively. That is why Marquis Daniels makes more sense to me.

Daniels is not a PG, by any stretch of the imagination. If Rondo goes down, I want a true PG ready to step in.

Have no problem trading for Daniels to back up at the 2 and 3 positions, though.

There are about 500 posters who disagree with your assessment here in the Marquis Daniels thread, as well as in some of the reports about his position. You may want to reconsider.

I'm torn on this.  I agree that now that we have Daniels on board (who is not a good perimeter shooter), Watson isn't the best fit.  However, he is by far the most talented PG available, so I think it would still be a good move.  They still have plenty of shooting on the second unit with House and Wallace.

i agree that watson would be nice as back up pg. better than pruitt for this team.
