Moon is a restricted FA, correct?

If so, I'm sure MIA would match an offer of our LLE. Perhaps this is one of the sign-and-trade options Ainge is rumored to be contemplating.

Yep, matching the LLE would be a given. We'd have to find something Pat wants. Perhaps we could help with a Boozer deal somehow? Doubtful.

Speaking of which -- Roy / someone -- can sign & trades be 3 team deals?

Yes, they can.  And in fact, that would probably the easiest way to make this happen, because of Moon's likely Base Year status.  For example, if OKC (under the cap) was still interested in Tony Allen, and would take on his contract (along with cash) in exchange for a heavily protected second round pick (read: one that will never be conveyed), that could turn into a 3-way deal, with Moon coming to Boston, and Miami would not have to take on any salary.

We could do a sign and trade with our expirings because Miami could be looking to sign another max contract free agent to go alongside D-Wade.

But unless we give them something they really want, it doesn't make a ton of sense for them to do a sign and trade, because they would just be taking on extra salary (and paying extra luxury tax) this year, when they could just let him walk.

So a sign and trade only works if the Heat actually want something the C's have to offer.

This is true. And I'm sure Riles will avoid taking on additional salary for this year or next.

Still, Boston could send out an expiring, low-cost deal, plus cash to cover payroll and lux tax costs, plus a draft pick, in exchange for a signed-and-traded Moon.

Perhaps Miami wouldn't match the LLE for Moon, if they are worried about lux tax and payroll beyond this year?

One idea: Scal and a humbled & signed Stephon Marbury at the minimum (you heard me steph, the minimum) for Moon. We know Riley's had interest in Steph. He'd have a nice chance to resurrect his career there.

Why would we want to help teams in the East get better?

One factor that could be an issue here is the lux tax. Not sure where the Heat stand now, but is there a chance the Heat might NOT match the LLE?

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/story/1104210.html

"""For now, any moves made to upgrade a team that went 43-39 and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs might be minor. That was the case Thursday when the Heat extended minimum qualifying offers to restricted free agents Jamario Moon and Joel Anthony, who both earned about $700,000 last season.

The Heat can match any outside offers they receive from other teams when the free agency negotiation period opens July 1. The cash-strapped Heat isn't expected to be a major player, with Riley confirming the team is within $300,000 of triggering the luxury tax on payrolls that exceed $71.2 million.

Barring a change in philosophy, that could take the Heat out of the mix for soon-to-be free agent guards such as Jason Kidd, Allen Iverson, Mike Bibby or any veteran who would command more than a one-year deal.

''This is not our year,'' said Riley, who doesn't expect to use the team's $5.5 million midlevel exception."""

Might this mean that a) they don't want to take on 1.9mil for Moon, and b) they don't want to pay him for a 2-year contract considering their plans for next summer?

I would say yes on both counts. Moon's QO was for just over $1 mil. Extending an offer of the LLE to Moon would force Miami's hand to either let him walk, or enter the lux tax zone *and* put Moon on payroll for next year.

Here's another article that indicates Moon may not be in their plans:

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/story/1040571.html

"""The Heat isn't sure if it will exceed the luxury-tax threshold to re-sign Jamario Moon; ideally would like James Jones to come off the bench; and after knee problems, will give another chance to Dorell Wright, who is owed $2.8 million for 2009-10. ''This is a crossroads year for him,'' Riley said, adding Wright is the ''most skilled'' of Miami's natural small forwards."""

I'd forgotten about Wright. And they have Diawara and Jones at the 3 as well.

The article also points out Riley's interest in having Beasley at the 3 (thinking Wade, Beisley and Bosh at the 4 as their potential future core).

Front page now says he wants to be in Boston.

I think he's a great fit. Hard nosed defense. Not the greatest scorer or playmaker but I loved him in Toronto. He also has the Eddie "crowd factor" which energized the bench for at least 41 home games.

The only obstacle I think is the "Riley REALLY wants to please Wade" factor.

As I said on the front page, thanks for the original quote about Moon wanting to play for the C's, and the articles about the Heat's position about Moon, which seems to mean that they would let him walk.

Hopefully we can sign him without a sign and trade but the LLE!

Though in the end Moon gets to choose which team he signs an offer sheet with, Im hoping the fact that he comes cheap doesn't cause a mini-bidding war, since Cleveland's looking for a backup 3 as well

That'd be a decent pick up, but I still think the Heat would match a LLE offer.
