I still believe a solid back-up at the SG/SF position is priority one right now. But as we look at lowcost options at PG -- should the Cs send Pruitt packing -- here are a few names to consider.

Royal Ivey: I've mentioned him on this board for years -- i've always liked his defense and believe he's a better floor general than typically given credit for. On a team as good as the Cs I think he could flourish.

Anthony Carter: I've heard others mention him, but i think he's a poor fit. He's way too small to play on the 2nd unit with House (one reason i like Ivey and Pruitt -- the size to defend 2s). And he's going back to Denver.

Here are two other Free Agents playing well:

http://myespn.go.com/nba/truehoop

Quincy Douby: It sounds like he's been working on his true PG skills, though he's not a good defender. But with limited options, he may be worth adding at the minimum.

Walker Russell Jr.: He's always intregued me. I've seen him play once or twice and he's a terrific passer, though he's small, raising the same concern as someone like Carter. IS he worth having into training camp to try to win a spot?

Anyone else?

Unless it is a PG with the talent level of Carter (which there really isn't one), use House as the back up PG until a deal can be made in a trade.

I rather House be just a shooter, but don't want to see the Celtics waste a roster spot just to sign someone with a PG next to his name.

By the way, another name is didn't mention: Marcus Williams. Like Russell, Jr., he would make for an interesting camp invite, especially if the Cs decline Pruitt's option.

I would love a PG with some strength, height or length who could come in and guard the opposing 2 guard.  Kind of like what Eric Snow used to do for the 76's a few years back when they had him and Iverson in the starting line-up.  He handled the ball up the court, but guarded the opposing SG.

I'm not actually sure who would fit that mold.

Mardy Collins.  Just don't think he is obtainable in a trade right now.

i don't think there is much out there from the PG spot...i think boston can piece together the point...my #1 choice was hudson before he got hurt...i just want a smart bak up point guard that takes care of the ball and doesn't do stupid things like gabe pruitt...

I don't see much on our roster they'd want. They're longer on wings and shorter on 1s.

It's true, the PG seems especially thin this offseason.  I'm not opposed to playing Rondo pretty heavy minutes.  I think he's the one guy on the team who is really capable of handling them.  I think we need someone to come in for 8 minutes and not turn the ball over, and perhaps a much better option will open up for us as the season goes along.

I'm counting on Ainge to make some moves near the deadline to actually satisfy what we need after some time to try this team out.  I'm sure there will be some more interesting prospects out there once all the other teams figure out where they're at.

I read some where about how well Williams looked in the summer league. I think if Danny keep Priutt around then he's our 3rd string PG, if Pruitts gone then William may be an option. House does a decent job playing 10-15 minutes as is, but this year Pruitt has to give us some minutes or they should just release him.

How about Chris Lofton? Yes, he's undersized, but I definitely like him more than Hudson and "Can't Buy A Bucket" Pruitt.

Hi... it's me again.  The guy that won't shut up about how important he thinks it is for the C's to get a backup PG.

I just wanted to throw Rondo's ankles into the discussion.

What is the scarier scenario: Having Pierce roll an ankle and be out for a few weeks, forcing us to rely on Allen/Walker/Giddens, or Rondo rolling an ankle (again), and having to rely on House and Pruitt to run the show?

This is a legitimate concern, but don't you understand at this point?  Rondo is an alien, impervious to damage.  Every time he rolls an ankle or his head gets crushed in it seems to miraculously heal within a few minutes. :P

I actually felt Pruitt was our best garbage time performer last year. The guy can hit the 3. So not sure what Chris Lofton adds that we don't have in House and Pruitt.

either. both. but i would much rather go through house and pruitt running the point on this team than giddens and walker manning the 2 and / or 3. Yes, Walker can dunk, but that's absolutely it, and the guy is a foul MACHINE. And Giddens is god aweful. He's Tony Allen with less atheticism -- watching him dominate the ball in summer league was like watching Phil Seymour Hoffman in Along Came Polly.
