The makeover of the Los Angeles Clippers may include a former scoring champion.

The team is in "very serious" talks with Allen Iverson on a contract, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday. ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported on Sunday that the Memphis Grizzlies have been pursuing Iverson, but owner Michael Heisley thought the Miami Heat had the inside track. The Charlotte Bobcats were also reported to have interest.

Iverson is a 10-time All-Star who has led the league in scoring four times. He has averaged 23.5 points and 5.4 assists per game over his 13 seasons but posted a career low 17.4 ppg average last season.

A bad back limited Iverson to 57 games last season between the Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons. He was also embroiled in controversy when he bristled at coming off the bench for Detroit.

The Clippers may be prepared to offer their full mid-level exception of $5.8 million on a one-year contract. The Grizzlies are reportedly willing to offer something in the same neighborhood, but the Heat are thought to be interested in paying him less than half of that figure.

The Clippers drafted Blake Griffin with the first overall pick in this year's NBA draft. They also traded forward Zach Randolph to the Grizzlies for swingman Quentin Richardson.

Per ESPN

Well, I don't know what to think about that, except that the Clips don't take much risk if they sign Iverson since they don't have any kind of chemistry to begin with.

Thoughts?

Smart move by the Clippers, at least in an economic sense.

AI will still put people in the seats.  From a basketball standpoint, I'm not sure it'd be that effective, though.  That team still appears to be on the track to mediocrity.

Tony is on a verge of a breakout year. I'd pass. What would Doc do without Tony? ;D

  • Yup
Clippers are the perfect team for AI at this point.  Let him score a bunch of points, play his minutes, and lose.
Yup

AI or Baron, who is going to pound the ball more?

Great way to get the number 1 pick enough touches on offense.

I say don't sleep on the Clippers next year.

I also wonder if this move will help the Clippers move Baron.

I continue to be surprised that Iverson and Miami can't come to an agreement. If I were Wade I wouldn't sign an extension either. Mario Chalmers and Chris Quinn are the worst point guard tandem in the league.

I think AI in Miami would be perfect seeing as they need another scorer, that's all they need.

seems like he's using the clips and memphis to drive up the dollars with miami.  Although the clips have some pretty good players, they might actually be better than MIA this is year.

Nothing to loose for the Clippers. If everything comes together for them they have a chance to be pretty dangerous.

PG  Davis/Collins
SG  Iverson/Gordon
SF  Thorton/Davis
PF  Randolph? (They keeping him or not?)/Griffin
C   Camby/Kaman

Now that is one heck of a line up on paper...

Full MLE for Iverson????

I read somewhere that Miami wasn't willing to go more than $2 million per and that Memphis was balking at AI's request for anything anywhere near the MLE. Truly must be a case of the Clippers doing something stupid again like trying to outbid themselves.

There's no market for this guy and Riley is right. At this point with his rep, with his back, with his attitude, with his mileage, he isn't worth anything more than the LLE.

Iverson is perfect for the Clippers. This is not a compliment to either parties.
