The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Magic have decided to match Marcin Gortat's five-year, $34 million offer sheet, extended to him by the Mavericks.

Wow...weird to give that much money to Howards backup? Granted its small money and made sense for the Mavs but why would the Magic pay that?  Desperation move?  I also dont like the Bass signing...Baby would have been a better fit IMO.
How is adding depth to your team a desperation move? Perhaps a bad trade could be a desperation move, but this is just committing to winning this season.

I don't think it's a desperation move.

However, would the Magic have been off keeping Hedu, or instead signing Bass and Gortat?  I think that's a legitimate debate; I'd take Hedu.
Hedo is getting up there in age.  Gortat and Bass fit in better long term with Howard and Nelson.

I think Gortat is a good player, and the Magic are definitely a better team for matching the offer, but that is just WAY too much money to pay the backup of your superduper star.  Unless they think they can play both DH and Gortat together, $7 mil is just too much for a backup.  They would be better off finding a competent backup center for half that price and spending the rest of the money elsewhere.

I don't think matching was a bad move but I will say that they better have a really strong front court because I hate what they did to their wing slots. Carter is not and will never be a team type player, and Hedo is gone as well as Courtney Lee.

I think it would depend on who they would then get to back up the 4 and 5.  Anderson is a nice player, but he can't do it himself...especially when facing frontcourt's like Boston's and Cleveland's.  While Hedo is a very nice player, I think his value is greatly diminished now that they have Carter (not to mention Nelson back) as a "finisher" who can create his own shot down the stretch.  But without Gortat up front, they could really struggle against Boston's 3 headed monster up front, and could be dead if Howard ever gets in foul trouble.

Really, I think the perfect situation would have been shelling out the money to keep both Hedo AND Gortat.  But I suppose I can only spend so much of their money.

The real question will be whether they are willing to use the trade exception, and really go all-in.

I think too much is made out of Hedo moving on. They were really unorthodox last season, and maybe they feel they don't need to be so unorthodox anymore as their players develop.

His name's Hedo, but Hedu sounds much better!  ;D
I agree; I would take Hedo and a minimum salary big.

I believe that's the Canadian version of his name.

We better keep Big Baby.

Rashard will play a lot more SF this season, his natural position.  They still have Mickael Pietrus!  A lot of people seem to forget that.  Pietrus is just as good if not better than Lee.  Not to mention, they probably still haven't given up on Redick as Carter's primary backup.

What does this signing say about Stan Van Gundy's security.  After Gortat openly criticized him in the playoffs, I thought he was assured to be on the way out to save money and avoid team chemistry issues...  I wonder if Stan likes the fact that Gortat is still going to be in Orlando.

Just to be clear, Gortat cannot be traded for 1 year.

I think he cannot be trade to Dallas for 1 year. He can be traded to any other team within a few months with his permission. Or do I have that wrong?

Hmm, I may be wrong, I can't seem to find this part in Coon's FAQ's.

He can't be traded to anyone for one year. The Hawks have been waiting for the same provision on Josh Smith to expire so they can dump him.

Gortat is a good player and a 7 footer.  You can never have too many of those.  Orlando was wise to match, particularly after losing Hedo.

Backup or starter is irrelevant. He is getting the equivalent of MLE money this season, not $7 million. We also used our MLE for a backup big, so I don't see how that is too much.

It is unlikely he will finish that contract with the Magic. But they needed a backup center and their clearly want to win.

They are clearly betting on him continuing to develop and perhaps increase in value. If that doesn't happen, then they will be stuck with a big contract.

But at least they know for sure that he won't get shorter.

So this is what I'm thinking for Orlando's depth chart:

C  Howard/Gortat
PF Bass/Anderson
SF Lewis/Pietrus
SG Carter/Redick
PG Nelson/Anthony Johnson

Now, that team seems pretty reasonable but far from scary.

Gortat's a pretty good player...I dont mind this deal for them at all.

What if they have him start?
Nelson, Vince, Lewis, Gortat, Howard

That would be a pretty [dang] good lineup

What about Baby over Bass...don't you think that makes more sense? (Weak) Comparison is KG spreading it out for the Landlord (Perk) under the net; reverse that and have baby opening it up more for Howard, seems more logical than Bass replicating to a much lesser extent Howards strengths.

I don't think Baby really has any more range than Bass... they can both shoot out to about 15 feet. They are pretty comparable, but statistically Bass is actually a little better in the major categories (points, rebounds, shooting percentages). Baby doesn't exactly stretch the floor, there are a lot of PFs with more range.

Don't get me wrong, I love BBD, just not sure Bass was a bad choice.

Also, they might not have thought they could get BBD for that price.

Um, Big Baby is not a good shooter. He made one big shot. There's a huge difference. Maybe he continues improving, but he was what - a bit under 40% on jump shots last year? That's not a good shooter.

I love their pickup of Bass, I think he's a very good young player, and is worth more than Big Baby.
So this is what I'm thinking for Orlando's depth chart:

C  Howard/Gortat
PF Bass/Anderson
SF Lewis/Pietrus
SG Carter/Redick
PG Nelson/Anthony Johnson

Now, that team seems pretty reasonable but far from scary.

I think "far from scary" is a bit of an overstatement. I mean, I'll take the Celtics' chances, but that is a very very good team. Our starters are probably better, but their bench is well ahead of ours.
Go Celtics.
