This was my thinking at the time:

Players on the payroll:

KG - $18.86 million
Perk - $4.89 million

Celtics renounce Allen, Allen, Scal, Walker, Giddens

Rondo is not renounced and his cap hold is $3.01 million

Pierce opts out and resigns at $10 million. That gives us 5 players on the roster and a payroll at $36.76 million. If the cap was at $53 million that's a little over $16 million to offer and then my thought was sign Wade, then once Wade is in tow extend Rondo and Perk, sign someone for the LLE.

What I forgot was Sheed's $6.3 million that he just signed and that the Celtics will have holds for this year's first round pick and next year's pick, and the holds for any other one year signings of this year and the contracts of any multi year contracts that get signed this year.

Hey it was early and I hadn't had my caffeine yet.

So realistically, Pierce's pay cut gets us just over an MLE exemption. Which probably means the C's offer both Ray and Paul slight cuts in pay while giving both 2-3 year deals, they extend Rondo and Perk and add another MLE guy or two guys for the MLE while dumping a bunch of players from among Tony Allen, Eddie House, Brian Scalabine, Gabe pruitt, Bill Walker, J R Giddens and Lester Hudson while adding a first round pick.

Our team is going to have a lot of problems if Tony is still on the team by the end of the season.

Hey, we all make mistakes.  But just to clarify, Rondo's cap hold is not $3 million.  That is his qualifying offer.  His caphold would be over $6 million (300% of his previous year's salary).

I really with some of the sites with salaries on them would clarify this on there, because it can be very deceiving, and constantly leads to these things being misreported (often by people who are paid to know this stuff).

It was probably addressed early, but I'm not sure that nick's calculations take into account Rondo's cap hold and the minimum salary roster holds we'd have for the number of signed players fewer than 12 we have.

Also, nick, how did you come up with $3.01 million for Rondo's cap hold?  Rondo's cap hold is equivalent to 300% of his fourth year salary, or $2,094,922 x 3.  That's equal to roughly $6.3 million.

EDIT:  Or, the exact same thing Chris said.

Yeah, like I said earlier Roy, busy morning, no caffeine, no time to look up the details. It was an idea I got off the front page and thought I'ld post it after doing some quick head math.

When I looked later at the posts coming in I researched it and saw I was way off.

And what is the lesson here?  Don't EVER believe what Gary Tanguay says, unless you have time to research it first, and realize he has no clue what he is talking about.
