I really wonder if this is all part of trying to get Boozer.  If they can clear enough cap space to combine with expiring contract of Kwame, in order to match Boozer's salary, Utah might actually do that, so they could resign Millsap, and then have those assets (trade exception, and expiring contract).

Yes, I am checking out a Detroit board and they seem to think this will make a trade easier.

Something along those lines would make sense.

Utah knows they are losing Boozer so they would take anything at this point.

I was thinking the same thing, Chris, but I couldn't get the ESPN trade checker to work for me.

Good move for both teams with that trade.

But, that still means there's both Rip and Gordon fighting for minutes.

I'm wondering whether Dumars thinks he can get Boozer (in a trade for Rip) and still have enough assets (Maxiell or Brown plus cap space) to land Tyson Chandler.

Yeah, the Gordon/Rip thing is wierd.  But I just don't see them finding a taker for Rip right now.  I think they are stuck with it.

Is Dumars trying to give everything with Denver? You'd think starting with Carmelo was enough.

On Denver's side though, I like it. I think Affalo is going to be much better than Dahntay Jones, whose exposure in the playoffs got him his contract.

Yeah, they're looking to get a rotation player for pennies again. Good target IMO.

Rip straight up for Boozer seems like a great rebuilding move for Detroit to me. They stay competitive this year, and next year they drop Kwame and Boozer for $16.6M in cap room. They could go after a max guy with that, no?

For Utah, I'm not sure why they would want that Rip contract, but it's pretty good talent in return considering their position. Maybe they think they are a contender with Deron / Rip / Harpring / Millsap / Okur (Miles, Kirilenko, Brewer, Korver)

I don't think they could afford to resign Millsap if they were trading for Rip's contract.

Great move for Denver (they basically gave nothing and received two good backup players in exchange). I hope Detroit isn't trying to go after Big Baby with the cap space, though. I just can't see Utah giving them Boozer for Hamilton because of Rip's long contract so hopefully it involves Utah and not Big Baby.

Well, with the extra cap room, Detroit could offer to take back some extra payroll from Utah to make a Boozer trade work. That could lower Utah's tax burden enough to allow them to match Portland's offer to Milsap.

Thanks for the insight, I didn't know that!

I'm feeling a little bit better about Big Baby, I think Dumars really wants Boozer, so he won't offer a big contract to Davis, unless the trade with Utah doesn't work.

I'm waiting for the official numbers on the Gordon and Villanueva signings.

But I think there may be a way that Detroit could offer to take back Matt Harpring along with Boozer in return for Rip. That might be enough payroll reduction for Utah to keep Milsap.

That would be a heckuva trade for Detroit. Harpring would fit in well there too.

That's a great thing to say, but the problem is, Utah doesn't have a ton of terrible contracts that they would want to get rid of.  There just are not many deals that make sense that would save Utah a lot of money, while taking on Rip's contract.

I've heard Harpring might be retiring.
