Dallas gets - Shawn Marion, Kris Humphries, Greg Buckner
Dallas gives - Jerry Stackhouse, Devean George, Antoine Wright

Toronto gets - Hedo Turkoglu, Devean George, Antoine Wright
Toronto gives - Shawn Marion, Kris Humphries

Memphis gets - Jerry Stackhouse, Quincy Douby, $2 million
Memphis gives - Greg Buckner

Orlando gets - $7 million trade exception
Orlando gives - Hedo Turkoglu

Likely to be bought out / waived - Jerry Stackhouse, Greg Buckner

This decreases the value of any Scalarine/Allen/Giddens expiring package, as Orlando can now take back $7 million worth of contracts using the exception.  Savvy move by Orlando.  Memphis makes some money off this transaction by dumping Buckner and getting Dallas to pay to buy out Stackhouse.  Toronto gets Turkoglu as planned and can now focus on Carlos Delfino.  Dallas gets Marion.  George, Wright, Humphries, Douby are all expiring and relative non-factors.

It's nice for Orlando that they have a $7 million exception, but are they likely to use it?  They wouldn't sign Hedu, and look likely to pass on Gortat due to luxury tax concerns.  Why, then, would they add a veteran making $7 million+ per season?

I doubt they use the exception this season.

If they WERE willing to pay the luxury tax, I'd be in contact with Houston to see what they might want for Battier.  I think Battier makes right around $7M, and I'm not sure the point of Houston having both he and Trevor Ariza around.

Jameer
Vince
Battier
Lewis
Dwight Howard

That's a pretty [dang] good starting lineup, even if they are still short on big men and reserves.

They may use the exception.  I doubt they picked it up for nothing.  Rumor was that they offered Hedo 7 million to stay (he is making around 10 in Toronto) and after letting Gortat leave they were looking at Rasheed and Bass.  Their value on each player was just lower than what they are now making.  They simply didn't value Hedo at around 10 or Gortat at around 6.  They also don't have to use it to take on a full 7 million.  They could use it to trade for someoe making 4 million.  Orlando has tried to spend, they have not tried to overpay.  Big difference.  This isn't Phoenix.  Orlando did after all take on Vince's 16 million.  Battier is a phenomenal fit for them and Houston might be willing to deal off a veteran that is now a lesser fit for their suddenly youthful roster.  Great idea and great fit.

All I'm saying is that I'm not scared.  I don't think that any player they trade for will be nearly as good as any of the players they've lost this season (Hedu, Lee, and Gortat).  Also, I don't see them bringing in one of the guys we'd be targeting with our expiring contracts (say, Nocioni).

Also, I don't think Battier is going anywhere.

Well, the Magic have a year to use the exception.  Who knows what they will do with it?  For one thing, it would certainly facilitate a sign and trade for a BYC player like Glenn Davis.

Not to turn this into a Houston post, but after this year, they will have only Yao Ming, Shane Battier, Trevor Ariza, Carl Landry, and James White under contract with options on Chuck Hayes, Aaron Brooks, and Joey Dorsey as well as a qualifying offer to Kyle Lowry.  Clearing the 7 million Shane Battier makes would allow them to be a HUGE free agent player in the Summer of LeBron.  Trading Battier and declining Dorsey's option gives them only 27 million under contract with a 50-54 million cap, giving them 23-27 million in cap space.  Possibly 2 players in the 11-14 range.  If Yao retires, then they could add 3 players in the max contract range.  There are few players in this league that can't be traded (Kobe, LeBron, etc...).  Shane Battier is not one of them.

How about
Orlando gets - Shane Battier
Houston gets - JJ Reddick, Ryan Anderson

and they use the trade exception to absorb the difference.

Extremely smart move by the Magic that  could net them a very valuable piece at the dead line or a Brandon Bass or someone of that caliber now.

Props to Otis Smith on that move.

Glenn Davis isn't the name I am thinking of since they could use part of the MLE for him.

What RFA would cost more than the MLE?  David Lee?

Certainly better than losing Hedo and getting nothing back in return.

LOL. Even worse, picking up Carter. Dude's never going to be a champion.
