Wow, what a robbery from Varejao! :o

Since it hurts the Cavs' future plans and that he is way overrated this signature sounds good for the rest of the league.

What a truly horrible signing by Cleveland. Their front court bigs rotation consists of Shaq(a really huge, old guy that misses an average of 20 games a year over the last 5 years), Z(a really huge, old guy that hates to play in the post and is a mediocre rebounder given his size), Hickson(a 2nd year player that has proven nothing and shown only Bill Walker like flashes) and AV(a mediocre everything that has no offense and who's specialty is to fall on his ass).

If Z and Shaq get injured, and given their histories it is more  likely to happen than it is to not happen, Cleveland is screwed. And I don't understand the Dahntay Jones signing at all. Now they have Mo Williams, Boobie Gibson, Delonte West, Dahntay Jones and Tarence Kinsley who are all 2's and have no real PGs on the whole team.

Edit: See below. I meant Anthony Parker and not Dahntay Jones.

Anthony Parker, nick.  Jones signed in Indiana.

OOps, still, same thing.

If I am a Cavs fan I am worried by what Chad Ford said about this signing on ESPN.com earlier.

"Varejao has been a huge source of energy and defense for the Cavs in the paint. With both Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas in the last year of their contracts, he has proven to be the Cavs' big man of the future."

Really, Chad? Big man of the Future? WOW!!!

I take it all back--Bargnani deserves 10 mil a season and Lee deserves, hell, 40 mil a season if this clown is making so much!
Carl: And, technically, he's supposed to be spayed, and uh, he ain't that. I know that first hand. Go ahead, ask me how I know. Go ahead. Ask me. Ask me how I know.

What the hell? The Cavs could have saved some money by paying me the NBA minimum to draw charges and grow out my hair. I'll even walk into some rakes for free.

This is really a shocking move by Cleveland.  They got Shaq and I think Parker is a good signing, but other than that thier offseason has been very poor in my opinion.  This really doesn't make any sense at all they must see something in this guy that many of us don't at all.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

I like how they have passed on deal after deal in order to maintain fiscal flexibility for 2010 and then they just flushed it for a player they will never run a play for ever
True, but they also had to look at the league's prediction of a shrinking cap. If that comes true then their plans for two max FAs were impossible anyways.

I think this signing is pretty predictable. They needed him back in the worst way, look at the other big men that are still available on the FA market. Not a whole lot of good options. So with the Cavs had a lot less levrage in their negotiations. Plus AV is coming off his best year by far.

I think he's a good player, but they probably over paid by 3 million a year.

He Is my least favorite player behind Joakim Noah.

It makes me angry that he is making so much money. But it makes me happy that the Cavs have him for 6 more years and that they are giving him like $8.5 mil a year to flop around on the floor

Awful signing. You can't sign these guys for big dough. Chris Anderson too was a really bad signing. Love them as players, but only at small money.

My only question... How does this rank next to the Mark Blount signing?

My God its looking more and more like the wolves got a steal in Big Al... All these scrub big guys (see Varajo, Baragnani) are signing these contracts that pretty much equal his.

heres the link...
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/60438/20090708/varejao_and_cavs_agree_on_6_year_$50m_contract/

Every time I see one of these contracts, I have one thought....

What the hell was Perkins' agent doing, letting him sign that what, four-year, $16M extension a couple years back?  Even at the time, that was a ridiculously cheap deal, and when you see Sideshow banking more than $8M per, it just makes you think...   Perk, that was REALLY dumb.

funny i thought the same thing,,,,but Perk had shown such little improvment at the times that the celts looked like they were being nice. Now its probably the best contract in the nba

Perk wasn't able to stay healthy at the time. And a lot of people were worried that we wasted a ton of money.

I was thinking the same thing, but if that is the case, then they should have been going much harder after the top FAs and offering more years and more money to get them.

they definitely are going to have to look back at the decision to not use Wally's expiring contract during the season. I believe that was another decision based on trying to have money for two max contracts...

that said, I guess it is a bit of a surprise how much the cap might drop.
