The Cleveland Cavaliers are close to coming to terms with Anthony Parker. The signing of the former swingman of the Toronto Raptors would be the teams first move in free agency off-season.

Plain Dealer reporter Brian Windhorst who covers the Cavs writes:

According to a league source, the team has agreed to the structure of a contract with veteran guard Anthony Parker. The deal is not finalized, but is expected to be completed in the next several days.

Parker is 6' 6'' and 215 pounds. He has played for 3 different NBA teams and has been a key contributor for the Toronto Raptors the past 3 seasons. The 34 year old has averaged just over 10 points a game in his career with nearly 3.5 rebounds and about 2 assists per game.

I'll be interested to see what the financials on this one are.

That would definitely be a blow.

Parker is okay, but I don't think he's going to shift the balance of power.  If we sign Grant Hill, I think things even out.

The thing that would hurt is if we don't wind up with a competent backup 3, much like last season.

I agree that if we end up with Grant Hill, then its fine.

However, I think the dropoff from those two to what else I'm seeing out there isn't exactly encouraging to me, either.

Me too. My guess would be a piece of the MLE. Otherwise there is no reason for Parker to settle so quickly when he is such a desired target.

If Hill and Parker are off the list, the next group gets dicey. Maybe the C's can convince Daniels or Carney to take a 1 year hit to showcase their value - Posey style.

Parker makes Cleveland better...but not THAT much better.

Parker isn't that much better than Wally Szczerbiak, actually.  He probably has about as much talent as Wally and Sasha combined at this point.  So yeah, it's a blow to us in that Parker is no longer an option for us, but it's not going to make the Cavs noticeably better.  They really needed Marion, Ariza, or Artest to improve considerably.

The real problem for us is if we don't sign Grant Hill.

Then we're really stuck with Bogans, Barnes, Jones, or possibly Daniels.  Either that or make a trade for some wing guys from a team in dire financial straights like the Kings (Garcia / Nocioni) or the Hornets (Wright / Peterson).

Yeah, the implication in my earlier statement was that its a blow for us considering the other alternatives if Hill goes elsewhere.

Nice pickup for Cleveland but it doesn't create a power shift in the East.

Would Parker have signed for less than $2 million, though?  That's what will be interesting to see, in my opinion.

If we trade our spare parts for Nooch, that's better talent (but worsened future flexibility) than signing Parker, IMHO.  Big issue there is that unless we re-sign BBD, it's really hard to trade Scalabrine, he's our fourth big and a guy we'll be counting on this season.

Stackhouse will be free before the summer's out, he's maybe not TOO far of a downgrade from Hill *if* he's healthy.

Compare Parker and Hill's stats.  The only thing Parker has going for him is he's potentially less likely to get injured.

Probably not, but what is one or two million more at this point , we are already over the cap and into the luxury . Would it be worth it to pay Parker  say 3 mil which would be 6 mil if he is gonna help us more?
I really don't know. I do know that I wish the cap was higher!

Eh, not really interested in Stackhouse.

Trading Scal isn't a big deal, though.  If we traded Scal, Tony Allen, and Giddens (roughly 7 million in expiring contracts) to either the Kings or the Hornets, we could get a couple wings guys in return.  Then we would just sign a half-decent big for the Vet. Minimum (i.e. Nesterovic) and we're just fine.

We couldn't have offered Parker more than $2 million.

Since we're over the cap, we basically have salary "slots" (called "exceptions") to offer free agents.

The first is the "MLE" (mid-level exception).  This was for around $5.8 million, and we had to spend all of it on one play, Rasheed Wallace.

The second is the "LLE" (bi-annual exception).  This is for $1.99 million.

The third is the minimum salary, which ranges from around $450k to $1.5 million, depending upon service time.

As such, once we used our MLE, we only had the LLE left to offer Parker.  We couldn't have given him more if we'd wanted to (unless we worked out some wacky sign-and-trade).
