Free agency news doesn't get any bigger than this for Yahoo! Sports: The Boston Globe's Marc Spears has joined our NBA staff.

Just to clear up any confusion: Marc Spears is leaving the Globe and will be a full-time force at Yahoo! Sports.

Ugh.  That's too bad -- Spears was on top of everything going on with the Celtics.  Congrats to him, but this is a loss for Celtics fans.

I'm assuming this means that he won't be on CSN anymore either?

That's really too bad.  Spears was the best writer they have had on the C's since Holly.  But I can't blame him, the Globe is doomed.  I think the best case scenario for someone to cover the C's at this point is if a website like WEEI.com can lure someone good to cover the C's beat.

The Boston Globe may shut down if the paper isn't sold.  Smart move by Spears.

Or SBNation (or Yahoo, I don't think the truehoop network or ESPN will ever do this) changes their paradigm and starts employing individual beat writers

How long until the only guys that are there at a Celts Grizzlies game to actually cover the Celtics are Mike and Tommy?

Man, that's really too bad.  He's been a heckuva beat guy for the C's.

I met and talked to him briefly at Ainge's press conference a couple of weeks ago.  Just a standup, nice guy.

that's too bad for c's nation. good luck to mr. spears though. he was one of only 3 boston media guys/gals who's opinion i valued. i like him, ryan rusillo, and to a lesser extent (for me)jackie macmullen. i thought spears was the best. he was informative, accurate AND very likeable.
