OK, I may be overreacting a little bit but I really feel bad about our offseason so far. I know that only two days have passed and that no team has already officially recruited a player (since we have to wait to the 8th of July). But let me resume briefly our offseason so far :
Day 1 : I'm feeling excited and confident about the Celtics offseason, I'm sure they will sign one of the big names of the market, one of the players we've been discussing for weeks (Sheed, Dice, Hill, Barnes, Moon...).
The rumor that Sheed could do Boston is surfacing on the Internet and slowly gains more and more momentum. We learn that Danny made a midnight visit in Sheed's house. The Celtics appear as the heavy favorites to land Sheed, Turkoglu is leaving Orlando for Portland or Toronto, Marbury is going to stay in Boston even for the veteran minimum, Hill is interested by the C's because of his bonds with Doc and his desire to win a ring, according to sources, Big Baby will probably re-sign with the C's for cheap, the Lakers just get betrayed by Ariza and they are starting to panic...
Everything feels great and the Celtics future seems bright.
Day 2 : Slowly, the bad news start popping on the Internet and the great feelings of Day 1 are long gone. Dallas is probably signing Gortat, which means that San Antonio will be going harder after Sheed, Grant Hill is probably signing with the Knicks for the full MLE, Marbury is probably signing in an other team because he wants more than the veteran minimum, Artest lands in L.A basically for a cheap contract for 3 years (!), BBD is now courtised by many teams, including the Spurs and the Pistons, Rasheed is said to prefer a 3 year deal and Danny just offered him two years (remember James Posey?), the Spurs could land him before us... Yeah, Day 2 sucks even more than Day 1 was great.
What do you guys think? I know it's too early to say but I guess I'm not the only one with this depressing feeling, the one that we're going to get screwed once again in free agency and that this time other contenders are going to acquire huge free agents.
I mean, the C's send Doc, The Big Three, Danny and Wyc to knock on Rasheed's door and all they get as an answer is "Hum. Interesting. You'll have to wait [probably several weeks] until I take a decision". Meanwhile Ron Artest explains that he received a call from the Lakers and basically agreed to get paid cheap to play in L.A. Everything went on in what? hours? OK.
I'm just really worried for our offseason (and by extension for the team's chances of winning the championship next year). I fear that Danny just focuses on Sheed and doesn't offer anything to big players (McDyess, Barnes, Moon...) because he is convinced that Sheed will sign in Boston. Basically, if he doesn't sign with us, Danny better has already offered contracts to the players I mentioned because otherwise we're screwed. We're left with the Shawn Marion like players who aren't going to offer you a discount price for their talent, but will want the maximum contract you can offer them.
