So Dumars spends 90 million today, but would rather pay 1.8 million to buy Oberto out to save 1.7 million?
He didn't buy out Oberto and he didn't pay 1.8 million to do so.

He waived Oberto before the 1.7 became guaranteed. The 1.8 million was a sunk cost. The question was whether they felt Oberto was worth 1.7 million for them. Apparently they don't feel he is worth 1.7 million for their team.

Thanks for restating my point. Dumars was willing to spend 90 million today, but not 1.7 million more to keep Oberto. Either Dumars is a dummy (possibility) or Oberto is cooked (also a possibility).

Why should he spend 1.7 million on a player he doesn't want, especially if that brings them closer to the luxury tax?

FYI, Dumars didn't spend 90 million today. You don't pay salaries all at once. Makes no sense to include Gordon's salary in 2012 when talking about not wanting Oberto this year.

I'm actually warming up to the idea Oberto in a Celtics uniform, but only for the minimum. Although slow, he can still bring defense and a jump shot. He'd certainly be a better last man than POB was.

I think you enjoy playing contrarian Guava, so I won't go back and forth. Basically you're saying what I'm saying that Dumars doesn't value Oberto as a good signing for 1.7 million.  And what I'm saying is the Pistons need big men as bad as the C's, so this is not a great sign for how much Oberto has left.

p.s. They owe Gordon and Charlie 90 million. The fact that they were willing to invest that much says that they are not one of the broke franchises that must cut salary asap. If Dumars thought that Oberto could be a solid center for them he would have paid the 1.7 million.

who cares about how much you owe someone over the total life of a contract?  all that matters is yearly cap number and staying under the luxury tax. saving that money on Oberto may have allowed them to make their signings and stay under the tax.

We couldn't afford to spend $1 million on Leon Powe.  Why?  Because of the luxury tax.
