In related news Danny had about half of the roster be developing players this past year as we fell to the Magic in 7, b/c we had no depth and Ray and Pierce were exhausted. POB, Giddens, Walker, Tony, and Pruitt really helped with the short window.  ::)

yeah, just read that....

pretty ridiculous to say you don't want to waste a roster spot on Leon, someone who we KNOW can contribute and know that he has the work ethic to return from the surgery.

especially in light of all the roster spots we tied up last year with players who couldn't contribute.

signing Powe is definitely not a waste of a roster spot.

I hope your right, but Powe may have a chip on his shoulder from Boston not giving him the intial contract and want to sign elsewhere. I see the point from both sides. Worst timing possible for Powe. Too bad for a guy who leaves it all on the court and has gone through so much.

The problem with that is that Leon CAN'T contribute right now, and probably not until next year.

well I disagree with the "probably till next year" part...

I think we will see Leon playing somewhere this year.

While I understand it.   It tends toward the direction of the Celtics being more of a meat market, than a "team".  And it really does emphasize that players who go out of their way for this "team" are fools.  Always base your decisions on you own self based interests.  Go for the money, go for the security, and don't bother looking back, because there never was anything there worth staying for.

Well Danny would rather see the carcass of POB, Mikki Moore, or the disgusting floppy man tits of Scalapig linger on the bench, rather then Powe on crutches I guess..... I wouldn't blame Powe for holding a chip on his shoulder and saying "%^&* you Danny" if they ask him to come back when he's healed.

agree 1,000%. It's not like Leon is commanding big money.

Re-signing Leon for a late season comeback is the Ubuntu move for the team and could be a big boost personnel wise gettning Leon back in January sometime.

Starting with the comment that Leon is my favorite Celtic the past couple years, this unfortunately makes sense. He won't likely provide any meaningful minutes this year, will cost twice his salary due to the luxury tax, and will indeed take up a spot that could be used for someone who might contribute. We always have the ability later this summer to jump in there and sign him if we don't fill out the roster unless another team decides to take a big gamble.

Ask yourself this. If another championship is won because we cut the guy would anyone feel that they did the wrong thing? It really is all about championships now, isn't it?! As much as I love the guy and think he is truly what all players should play like, it was a smart move. Better Danny is clear with the guy up front and give him more opportunities to sign with another team than string him along. THAT would be something the guy doesn't deserve.

the crux of the whole thing is the "meaningful minutes this season" part.

and for me, there is good reason to think that he could give those minutes this season. especially on a team where he knows the whole system and has been productive.

So, who's telling Pierce that he has to play 40 minutes per night, because we chose to offer our 15th roster spot to someone who won't play in 60% of the games this season, instead of signing a capable backup SF?

More likely to contribute meaninglful minutes this season, Tony Allen or Leon Powe?

Cut Tony and sign Leon to the minimum for two season. Costs the C's an extra $1.5m for a year and a half of POWE instead of a year of Tony.

why can't we give that job to the 14th roster spot?

signing Leon doesn't preclude getting a backup SF.
