but it might make Cleveland go even harder after Rasheed since they appear to be missing out on Charlie Vilanuava

Maybe I'm crazy of something, but what is detroit doing?  I mean I need to see the contracts first, but why those two?

Add those two guys to the team they already have and I still see them as chock full of problems.  These signings don't put them over the top of the likes of Boston, Cleveland, Orlando's of the Eastern Conference (much less the Western Conference.)

Weren't they expected to be major players in the 2010 free agent class?  Won't this carry ramifications for the cap space next year?

I like Gordon, but he's incredibly one dimensional and does a lot of the same things Rip does.  Villanueva doesn't do it for me at all.

I don't think either player is really the type of guy you build a team around.  If I were Dumars, I would have waited until next summer.

That being said, according to the article neither deal is done yet.  I'll be interested in seeing the financials.

True, although they're in the same financial situation that we are.  If Boston is Rasheed's first choice, it will be because of his friendship with KG.

No sir, Professor, you are not crazy!!

These moves make absolutely no sense to me. They are adding to positions that they already have locked up in the SF and SG positions with Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton. The only thing that makes any sense is that they are going to be moving these two guys for a possible big man, which they desperately need, or a $20 million expiring contract, or in the case of Amare Stoudemire, maybe both.

And, I'm sorry, but I'd rather have Prince and Rip on my team any day rather than the non-defense attitudes and abilities of Villanueva and Gordon.

Simply a head scratching move on Dumars part. What has got into this guy since losing to the Celtics in the ECF last year?

they have to be looking to move Rip and Prince, or else these moves would make no sense.

Yeah, I think Joe Dumars should've been the one fired, not Michael Curry.  First he trades a winner like Billups for a loser like AI, now he goes out and signs a soft, no-defense tweener like Villanueva, then he goes out and signs the undersized, no defense Ben Gordon at a position he already has Stuckey and Hamilton.

Villanueva makes a lot of sense, as he replaces all of Rasheed's production (but none of his toughness) at about 1/3 the price.

Gordon, on the other hand, make zero sense unless they plan to trade Hamilton. Even if they do, Hamilton is a much better player.

This is a glad day for Celtics fans, Dumars just eliminated a potential source of competition.

It's all about the financials... the best team Dumars built was 4 relatively affordable guys (Billups, Hamilton, Wallace, Tayshaun (rookie contract)) and then added Wallace.

I've never been high on either Gordon or Charlie V. but if he can get them for $9M & $7M respectively, they'd have a lineup of:

Gordon / Stuckey / Bynum
Hamilton / Stuckey / Afflalo
Prince / Daye
Villanueva / Maxiell
Oberto / Kwame Brown

If he could deal Prince or Rip Hamilton for a center, that's a team that *could* grow into a pretty good team.
