I keep hearing that Iverson may not even get an offer.  Apparently good teams don't want him as a starter and don't believe he can come off the bench effectively.  And the poor teams, for the most part, just don't have any need for a player like Iverson.  I'm sure he will end up somewhere, but a lot of NBA writers/analysts think he may be forced into early retirement.  That is just crazy to me.

And for the record I don't think he would really fit on the C's, but if you could get him for the minimum, wouldn't you have to think about it?

No because while he'd be a productive player at that price his attitude would be a distraction.

It is his own fault.  When Detroit tried to play him off the bench last year, he had issues that he brought to the media.

Good teams do not want to take that chance (right now).

He still sells tickets.  Surprised a team with low attendance doesn't offer him a short contract just to sell tickets.

I'm sure somebody will step up and offer him a contract, but a lot of teams will stay far away from him.

Europe might be his best chance at a big contract. Somewhere that will him be the star player.

I don't think AI would *ever* sign for the minimum -- he'd retire first.  However, if he was willing to play here for the minimum, I think Danny would take a chance on him.

I do think Charlotte will offer him more than the minimum, though.

I don't know about Charlotte. They have Raymond Felton and DJ Augustin at the point. Then Henderson and Bell at the two. Wallace and Radmanovic at the three. All good players, all earning midlevel or more money except for the two young guys who are big parts of their future.

Before they picked up Henderson in the draft, I thought they'd make a run at AI, but I think they stand down now.

Dallas is a team that I think will offer Iverson a contract.

Mark Cuban won't be scared of taking that risk.

True, but would they want both AI and Terry?  The pretty small at the SG spot.

Not to mention what will they do at the point if Kidd leaves. A backcourt of JJ Barea, Iverson, and Terry would be a joke.

Yeah i was going over the free agent list with a buddy at work yesterday and we were both miffed as far as where we thought Iverson could even land.

Someone just mentioned Dallas...that's one of the few destinations that i came up with as well.  Obviously it wouldn't be a perfect fit, but that team seems to be spinning its tires and wasting the best years of Dirk.  I could see Cuban trying to shake things up by signing a guy like Iverson -- plus we all have seen how well Jason Terry plays as the 6th man.

This is the classic case of a player past his prime but still thinks he is good enough to start for most playoff teams when he is more suitable to come off the bench.  But instead of accepting the 6th man role and flourishing with it he gets mad and pouts about it.

I actually think that if Kidd leaves, Dallas would be a really good fit for Iverson.  They would need to add a decent size 2, but Terry could still come off the bench.  Dallas's biggest struggle for a while has been half court scoring outside of Dirk.  Their second best options is hoping for a fast break with Howard (nota great halfcourt player).  I think Iverson would take that entire scoring load, and their defense would improve from the much slower and aging Kidd.  I think that would be a pretty good fit for AI, and Cuban would love the tickets they sell, media they attract, and points they put up.  If Kidd stays though, it's all a wash.

Yeah.  I don't know what the future holds for AI.  I think someone will give him more than the min.  Going back to the OP's original question, I'd bring him in here for the minimum, but that's about it.  He doesn't meet any of our real needs: he's not a backup big man and he's too short to backup the 2 and 3 spots.

If he ever came here, I don't see him giving us a heck of a lot more than Marbury gave us simply because the minutes aren't there.

As for the Celtics and how much you offer him, I think there is a lot more to lose than there is to gain.  Even for the minimum, the last thing the Celtics need is for someone to come in behind Rondo and complain about playing time or make a stink.  Rondo already has enough baggage that the team deals with, this is asking for a fist fight in the locker room.  I would honestly have to sit down and think about it if he even offered to play for free.  All he brings at this point is good scoring (we have that already) and decent defense (Marbury played decent D last season).  I just don't see enough of an upside in a best case scenario from a pure ball-in-hand guy.  Just makes no sense, not even at the minimum.

I could see a potential match between A.I. and the Grizz for several reasons:

1) He would help put bodies in the FedEx Forum. Michael E. Heisley is ultra cheap, but if he thought Iverson would generate revenue he would definitely give Chris Wallace the green light to pursue A.I.

2) A.I. would like it because he would be THE man on bad team. They have some young pups that are up and coming, but he is the veteran all-star with credentials.

3) He's already quite popular with the large African-American population here in Memphis.

4) He would have free license to be a ball hog and jack up shots (the rest of the team does so why wouldn't he?).

5) He would start over Conley. I don't think Conley has done enough to solidify the starting point guard spot yet.

6) Memphis also has a little cap space.

Just seems like the ingredients are there for a good fit.

If you don’t want to win, don’t want to play team basketball, and it’s more about you then you’re probably not a Celtic." Doc 2010
