I'll be very disappointed if Danny doesn't sign Powe.

If we sign him for the minimum, rather than the qualifying offer, it saves the team approximately $600,000.  I can definitely see why they made the decision they did, although I absolutely want Powe back.

But they save 100% of his salary by not signing him.

True, but isn't he worth the gamble at the minimum? I think so.

When healthy, he's been a valuable asset to this team and I certainly think the risk/reward of Powe at the minimum is worth the shot.

Well, sure, you can say that about any player.  Of course, if they sign *any* player (who has at least two years experience), they won't be saving any money, since Powe would presumably he making the minimum.

I think this is the right course.  Patience.

They also don't waste a roster spot on a player that can't play.

I am annoyed at how his agent is trying to frame this move. The idea the Celtics are a bad organization because they didn't extend the QO to Powe is silly.

Eh.  I understand the reasoning, but each team has three inactive players every game, so it's not like Powe would be hurting anything.

I think the team would be stupid not to take a $800,000 gamble on Powe.  If he doesn't contribute, he's no different than Hudson or Pruitt or Giddens or whoever the other inactive players.  If he does contribute, we have an absolute steal.

The other thing we need to keep in mind here is that the C's have a lot of guys under contract or have their rights:

The Starting 5
House
Giddens
Walker
T. Allen
Davis (QO)
Scalabrine
Pruitt (when do they decide on him)

Simply re-signing Powe quickly could eat up valuable roster spots that could be important in a trade.

I hope they do re-sign Powe; however, I also get the angle that if they bring in Sheed, get another center like Oberto at the minimum, bring back Baby, and keep Scal, there really isn't room for him.

Better to let free agency play out. I'm sure no one is knocking down his door with offers.

Horrible move by Danny.  This was about saving money pure and simple.  It would not have affected our MLE or pursuit of other FA.  It only would have affected out luxury tax situation.

Agents do not forget things like this.  Players talk to each other and don't forget things like this.  This will only add one more reason why a free agent will not come to Boston in the future.

Why?  This is a business.  Powe is not worth that much at the moment.

How much money is your reputation worth?  Loyalty and trust to your employees by management is something you can't put a price on.  Especially one as low as Powe would have costed.  This is a guy who was a good soldier for the Celtics.  And we turned our back on him to save some money.

It's not like Powe was going to break the bank this offseason.  If anything, we would have got Powe on the cheap with a qualifying offer because of the injury.  If he were healthy, he would have commanded a big pay raise like Big Baby will.

Agreed. Powe is coming off, what, his fourth major surgery? No need to extend an QO when Boston should be able to get him cheap on a one year, minimum contract. It's great that he played an important role in our recent success but you can't go back and retroactively reward people for past play when you know there is a very good chance that he will never play at that level again. As mentioned earlier this is a business afterall.

With that said, I am praying and hoping that Powe will be back next year and healthy by the All Star break.

Carl: And, technically, he's supposed to be spayed, and uh, he ain't that. I know that first hand. Go ahead, ask me how I know. Go ahead. Ask me. Ask me how I know.

They can still resign him.  They just didn't give him a QO.

Powe will not resign here for the minimum.  Why would he?  He needs to showcase himself for his next contract, and he will only be able to do that somewhere where he can get more playing time.  This guy is fighting for his career now.

Why not?

If healthy, he gets minutes with Boston.
