Leon Powe should stay with the Celtics while he returns from injury. The Celtics know what he's capable of and will likely be the most trusting and patient team around while he recovers.

Then Powe should leave right after, and join a team that will give him more minutes, so that he can develop past his current role.

I think for Powe, that's the best professional career move.  :)

but he needs to sign with a team so he's making money. going into the season with no contract would be crazy. what if he has another setback?

he needs to get someone pay him now IMO. so he has a little financial security.

Sure theres logic...

a) extra roster spot
b) he has two freakin' ligaments torn in his leg...Plus its not his first kneee injury
c) Big Baby proved he can play off the bench and score and rebound. (16 and 6 in the playoffs as a starter, i like that off the bench)
d) Why do we need two undersized big men to come off the bench?
e) More money to sign a free agent that is 1) better than Powe and 2) Some that can PLAY and is not injured!

I hate to see him go but if we can add Sheed or another big, I dont see it effecting us much.

Yeah, I'd like to see him back, but he can Baby are largely repetitive.  If Sheed comes on, you could argue we don't really need Baby or Powe, let alone both.  I'd personally prefer Powe at the minimum over Baby at big money; however, I also understand that that Giddens and Walker are already eating up roster spots with no guarantee to contribute.  We might add Pruitt and Swift to that list too if Danny keeps Pruitt or signs Swift.  Having Powe be the 5th question mark on an aging team wouldn't have been a good idea.

Personally, I they clear away some of those questions marks through trades or cuts (with Pruitt), but for the meantime, I can't completely blame Danny.

I dunno.. I think this is a bad move. Its not like Leon is just some stiff. I have a feeling someone else is going to come in and sign him. Hes worth the risk IMO. this sucks

Horrible move by Danny.  This was about saving money pure and simple.  It would not have affected our MLE or pursuit of other FA.  It only would have affected out luxury tax situation.

Agents do not forget things like this.  Players talk to each other and don't forget things like this.  This will only add one more reason why a free agent will not come to Boston in the future.

is leon powe entitled to some scholarship program we are unaware of?

I love the kid, i hope with all my heart he comes back at 100% at christmas, plays like gang busters off the bench, and gets a big deal next year.

But the boston celtics, as me and other posters have said, are not in the charity business. They are not required to make horrible business decisions and give an injury prone bench tweener 600,000 dollars at the cost of 1.6 to themselves to make you feel good.

First of all, i love how at first everyone was saying it was a smart decision to not give him an offer because we'll just sign him for less later.  Now that we find out the Celtics probably won't even end up signing him later (and he probably won't accept), all of a sudden people are saying he's not even worth the minimum in the first place.  Danny needs to start listening to Doc, cause he actually knows what he's talking about.  Anyone who says this isn't all about about saving money is completely ignorant.  I'd like the know what happened to the winning is everything mentality we had in 08.  I know Doc and the players still have it, what happened to Ainge?  Since when is 1 million dollars such a sacrifice for even the smallest chance Powe could be helpful down the line.
As for the roster spot, that's bull too.  Powe for 5 months is way better than half of our bench for the full season.  And we already know he can play good with our team.  I really want to see what in God's name Danny has in mind for our bench.  Cause i can't see it having more than 3 or 4 players more valuable than Powe.  I know it's gonna have AT LEAST 3 guys who won't play at all.
As for the Celtics overall, weren't we always a team that EMBRACED role players?  Guys like Tony Allen and Scalabrine who aren't the most gifted, yet we keep them around because we know they give more effort than anybody else on our team.  Those guys are a small yet essential part of our team.  And Doc and the fans are always grateful for what they provide.  Leon Powe had talent, he did what he was told, and i NEVER saw him made a mistake.  He never committed an unnecessary foul.
This has nothing to do with giving him 'charity'.  He went down when filling in for Garnett and his injury.  Everyone had patience when Garnett took longer than expected to return.  Talent-to-money wise, they're the same thing.  Why wasn't Garnett wasting roster space?  Leon was a part of this team, dropping him off to pay less luxury tax is despicable.
Can't wait to see what you're gonna do with all your roster spots Ainge.
