okay, from my other thread on this topic, it's pretty clear that figuring this out is tricky.

so I thought another way to look at it is to take the list of the upper echelon FAs and say where we think they will go. It kinda puts into perspective how many players are out there and how few places there are for them to go:

Carlos Boozer
Hedo Turkoglu
Ben Gordon
Andre Miller
Jason Kidd
Allen Iverson
Rasheed Wallace
Antonio McDyess
Shawn Marion
Mehmet Okur
Ron Artest
Lamar Odom
Charlie Villanueva
David Lee
Marcin Gortat
Zaza Pachulia
Anderson Varejao
Trevor Ariza
Raymond Felton
Marvin Williams
Josh Childress
Paul Milsap
Rodney Carney

That's a lot of players looking for pretty good sized money and not many landing pads to place them in. Most teams are over the cap and only have the MLE (meaning only one per team if they command more than half the MLE).

Also, for all those players that might re-sign with the team they are on, keep in mind that any big multi year contract they sign will affect their ability in the 2010 FA market.

did I leave any big money guys off the list?

Carlos Boozer -  back to UTA
Hedo Turkoglu - POR
Ben Gordon - back to CHI
Andre Miller - back to PHI
Jason Kidd - no clue
Allen Iverson - no clue
Rasheed Wallace - uh, well, I know where I hope he goes
Antonio McDyess - DAL
Shawn Marion - Is TOR really going to tie up money in him?
Mehmet Okur - DET? OKC?
Ron Artest - I wonder if he would consider DAL
Lamar Odom - the report today is not back to LA....where does that leave?
Charlie Villanueva - Well, if they go after Ben Gordon, doesn't that make him an MLE guy
David Lee - is NYK really going to risk 2010 on signing him?
Marcin Gortat - again, I think he becomes an MLE guy
Zaza Pachulia - ditto Gortat
Anderson Varejao - will CLE re-sign and risk LeBron + Bosh, if not will Var be happy in MEM?
Trevor Ariza -  back to LA
Raymond Felton -  I guess to CHA but are they good enough to tie up almost all their money?
Marvin Williams -  back to ATL
Josh Childress -  no clue. I can't see ATL tying up money in him to match
Paul Milsap - UTA. but what if Boozer doesn't opt out
Rodney Carney -  probably not a huge salary but how much will MIN match?

There are a lot of wild cards out there.

Yeah, if those guys get more than the MLE, it's going to be back where they just were, since nobody who wants veterans (except Detroit and Portland, which only has room for one above-MLE offer) has any money to offer. When Detroit signs Gordon for $8 mil a year, they're down to one more above-MLE signing. I think Odom's options will be Detroit or LA, and he'll stay in LA. Maybe Detroit offers some money to Okur if Odom doesn't work out.

My biggest wish from that list - Detroit offers Charlie Villanueva around $5-6 mil a year, and Cleveland counters and gets Villanueva for the full midlevel. That would be great. Cleveland would lose the max cap space for 2010, so they resign Varejao. Cleveland in the end replaces Ben Wallace with Shaq and Wally/Pavlovic with Villanueva. They'd improve, but not by enough. And that's one more team out of the MLE bidding contests between Boston, SA, Dallas, maybe LA (if they let Odom or Ariza walk), maybe Orlando (if they let Turk AND Gortat walk), maybe Chicago and maybe Miami.
Go Celtics.

Here are my guesses/expectations:

  • Carlos Boozer - Utah or Detroit for $12-15 million
  • Paul Millsap - Utah or Detroit for $10 million
  • Mehmet Okur - Utah for $10 million
  • Hedo Turkoglu - Portland or Detroit for $8 million (could fall hard if things go wrong)
  • Ben Gordon - Chicago or Detroit for $8-11 million
  • David Lee - could be any number of places. Signs for $8-10 million
  • Ron Artest - Houston for $8 million
  • Lamar Odom - Lakers for $7-9 million
  • Shawn Marion - Toronto for $7-8 million
  • Andre Miller - Phily for $7-8 million
  • Jason Kidd - Dallas for $7-8 million
  • Anderson Varejao - Cleveland for slightly above MLE
  • Trevor Ariza - Lakers for MLE or slightly above
  • Raymond Felton - Bobcats for MLE type deal
  • Marvin Williams - Hawks for MLE or slightly above

The MLE crowd

  • Allen Iverson - available for MLE
  • Rasheed Wallace - available for MLE
  • Antonio McDyess - available for MLE
  • Charlie Villanueva - available for MLE
  • Marcin Gortat - available for MLE
  • Zaza Pachulia - available for MLE
  • Josh Childress - possibly available for MLE. Atlanta may match, making it a $7+ million type offer to snare him away from the Hawks

It looks like Atlanta is going in another direction (Crawford, Teague).

Good chance Bibby will be available for the MLE.
