on the laptop while i reinstall XP, and need some advice on a free ( i know, i know, but i have zero funding right now) virus and spyware blocker until i can afford to reinstall a top notch system.

Is there anything that might suffice?

I get all my software from work, but a great site for free software is: http://download.cnet.com/windows/

You can get a lot of what you need here.

I use AVG and SuperAntiSpyware. Both are free and I've not had any problems.

Avira AntiVir is a good one. It caught Trojans and stuff that neither Mcafee nor AVG caught on my system.

AntiVir can be a bit annoying because it has some crap that keeps popping up ads. Follow these steps so that doesn't happen:

You may also want to consider malwarebytes.

ClamWin is a great open-source program for Virus protection.

http://www.clamwin.com/

I use Ad-Aware personal(the free version) to take care of Spyware.

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Have been using this setup for years and have never caught a virus. Occasionally catch some spyware but Ad-Aware takes care of that at night
