This draft year has bust written all over it. But overall which team did the best job?

My pick would be the Grizzlies. They got the best interior defender & Rebounder with unlimited potential Hasheem Thabeet. And two of the toughest college player this year DeMarre Carroll & Sam Young. They also traded for Richardson a great 3point shooter. Their Point Guard situation is still a work in progress, but that team is stacked.

Maybe now, people in Memphis become interested again in basketball. If Grizzlies don't get their act together, that franchise will relocate.

I'm going with Minnesota.  I really think Rubio is going to be an amazing fit next to Big Al.  I'm not as confident about Flynn (I would have gone with Curry), but there's no rule that says you can't have two point guards.  Ellington is a good shooter, and they got themselves a future #1.

Of course, the Clippers should be the big winner, but they have a way of screwing up even sure things.

I think Memphis did OK I guess, but I'm not too optimistic about Thabeet.  At best he'll probably be a poor-man's Dikembe with very little offense.  But he'll give them a decent backup C for Gasol at least.

I like OKC next year with Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Green and whatever-center-they-can-get.  Still, I think they ought to have taken Rubio.  Teams are really going to regret letting him slip to #5 in my opinion.  OKC really could have been something special with Rubio feeding passes to Durant all day long.

I want to say the T-Wolves but Flynn / Rubio just doesn't make sense to me.  Maybe if I see it in action I'll warm up to it.  Wayne Ellington was a good value at 29.  Still, with the 5 and 6 I feel like their back court isn't as good as it could have been (imagine if they had ended up with Curry and Harden for example).  I really don't understand why they didn't take Curry - they had one of the worst shooting teams in the league last year, so getting the best shooter in the draft would've been great for that I would have thought.  Getting the future first was a nice move, though, considering that next year's draft will likely be much better than this one.

The Warriors did well to take Curry instead of Jordan Hill.  Curry will have a great time in Don Nelson's fast paced, small ball, shoot-first-and-play-defense-later system.  Maybe not as much fun as with D'Antoni, but close.  Especially if the Warriors can get Amare.  The Wolves are going to regret not taking Curry.

The Spurs did well taking DeJuan Blair who somehow plummeted like a rock in the draft because of worries about his knees.  They need energy and youth up front and Blair could very well give them that.

It's hard to say who else did well besides that, because outside of the top 9 or 10 it's a stretch to say that any of those guys will be better than backups.

During the season Curry was being projected as a mid-first rounder by pretty much everyone.  I really have no idea why he shot up draft boards so much.  Curry is quite simply not a top 5 player, even in this draft.  The Wolves did fine by not taking him.  In fact the only reason I thought they might take him was to trade him to the Knicks.

Because this draft is awful. Tyler Hansborough ending up being the 13th pick! He was projected from 25 to 40 in a normal draft.

I think the Spurs made out like bandits considering what they had to work with. DeJuan Blair was suppose to be a first round lottery pick but slipped to#37 second round, which i think was wrong in this particular draft. He could possibly contribute right away to the Spurs.

I'm still trying to figure out minny:
rubio could be pistol pete or he could be ernie d (or worse) but worth the chance but why draft all the guards?  I'd assume they are going to be doing some trading but if they don't then the drafts don't make sense.
memphis i think did well
lots and lots of guys in this draft look like they could have 10 year careers but as bench players (not counting griffin)

Minnesota.  I expect them to trade Rubio to the Knicks for a package that includes David Lee and other goodies.

I still believe Rubio was the second-best player in this draft, maybe the best.  I can understand why Memphis passed on him because he said he didn't want to play there and Thabeet can protect the basket for them. But I'm scratching my head at OK City's #3 pick.

The other head scratcher was Demar DeRozean with #9.  DeRozean is not ready for the NBA and IMHO he will be a bust.

If Minny get Lee then it makes sense.  Rubio on offense is so pete maravich looking its weird.  His defense against rondo, parker, billups etc is what makes me think maybe he won't be able to have an effect as a starter in nba.
Head scratcher for me #10 pick jennings.  Great idea to go to europe to play/enjoy life but is he an nba player at all? i'm not seeing it

All reports from our Celticsblog Euros who've seen him the most say his defense is the best part of his game right now. For all his passing ability his offense is still a work in progress.

Now does he have the physical tools to be a shut down defender, but you don't have to have a great defender at the 1 to win. *cough*Steve Nash*cough

I think Minnesota because they got Rubio.  They could let him develop or trade him for a boatload.  They did well.

I rephrase: he doesn't look to have the 1 on 1 defense, good help d etc.  Nash (adding my own big cough) is a former mvp  ??? who is a defensive liability.  Neither guy is john stockton who was great at help d, reading lanes and for a 6' guy could play good 1 on 1 d.

Minny is in a good place because Flynn is ready now, and he takes some pressure of Rubio. In a year or two they cane trade whichever one does not work out.

I think on Value relative to Possition, San Antonio won in a landslide.

I agree with this assesment.  The draft wasn't anything special so i can't hate on Minny for picking for value rather than need - Rubio and Flynn could both end up being the two best players from this draft in a few years.

San Antonio did a fantastic job with their picks.  Jack McClinton and Dejuan Blair were the cream of the crop in the toughest conferences in college, both guys should provide immediate depth to a team who has an incredible nucleus right now.

I know a lot of people don't like Tyler Hansborough, but when you look at the facts the guy is THE, if not one of the, most accomplished college athletes in history.  There's something to be said for guys who don't take any plays off and raise the level of play for the 4 other guys on the court.  Indiana also snuck in and grabbed AJ Price real late in the 2nd.  Guy is kind of one dimentional, but he's a proven scorer who has tons of range.  i like what Indiana did this year.
