If Danny Ainge had the nerve to propose Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen in exchange for Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Rodney Stuckey, as a report insisted, he didn't have the guts to deal directly with Joe Dumars. Joe never spoke to anyone from Boston about this, e-mailed a Pistons official. "Sounds like Danny had one of his scouts call one of Joe's scouts and run it up the flag pole. When the scout presented it to Joe he thought it he was a joke, but was told it was serious. Joe's response was, 'You gotta be kidding me!' His next response was, 'Absolutely not!'
New York Post

Am I missing something here? The Pistons would get out of Rips contract, set up for a major free agent this year, next year and get a a top 5 PG. He reacts like that? What a smug jerk.

Well they plan on competing next season (which they won't) instead of rebuilding... so if you think you're a playoff team next year, then you dont trade your leading scorers.

This is a fourth hand quote; it's not like Dumars send this to a reporter.  We have no idea what he really said, and at worst he said this in a private conversation within the organization.  Hardly makes him a jerk, and if the Pistons wish to compete this year, which they may, it is not a great trade for them.  They already have cap room to sign someone this year, and this trade does not advance that as it swaps salary.

What's wrong with Rip's contract?  He makes ~$11M this upcoming year (his last year). A contract like that could be a valuable bargaining chip this summer or upcoming season.
(not to mention, Rip is a pretty decent player as well...)

Okay, my bad.  I was using hoopshype and it is one of the rare times that I have found them lacking the necessary info.
Rip signed a contract extension fall 2008 for 3 yrs $34M as you noted, but it also seems like it is guaranteed for 2 yrs.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3680959

So it would seem that Rip is for sure on the books for ~$11M/yr for the next 3 yrs, not 1 yr as I said above.

Go with shamsports.com.  They're much more accurate.  Many of the salaries on hoopshype aren't even possible under the CBA (i.e., rookie contracts are listed for more or less than the slot range, players are paid less than the league minimum, etc.)

It's just his reaction and the ignorance of the media that gets me. I mean, that deal is not absurd... that's all I'm saying.

Indeed.  I kind of respect the fact that he realized that the 2004 championship was pretty much a fortunate circumstance (weak Eastern Conference, Lakers team that went into disarray) and that it wasn't going to happen again with the group he had.  But to think that Chauncey for Iverson was going to change that is just plain crazy.

Amazing, they aren't acknowledging Rip's contract accurately either. Any chance this extension just didn't happen and the media got it wrong?  :-\

Not sure if anyone noticed, but in the same article Vecsey floats the rumor that the Rockets and Suns are talking about a swap...T-Mac, Aaron Brooks, and Carl Landry for Amar'e and Barbosa.  What do you guys think? How does that package compare to Rondo and Ray?
