I think this is one of the worst Ideas I have seen on this blog in a long time. He is a terrible defensive shortstop which is our teams biggest weakness. You are also talking about trading away a proven pitcher, who is far better than SABATHIA, BTW.... a guy that has won in the playoffs and already produced us a ring, and then you wanna trade more prospects? regardless of the fact that one of our top five prospects is a shortstop and we are currently paying Lowrie and Green next to nothing to play the position.. This just makes no sense.
Casey Kelly is not going to stay at SS, he will most certainly be a pitcher if and when he makes it to the majors. He has been dominant as a pitcher so unless he comes out and hits .400 as a SS after he reaches his limit the Sox are gonna make him a pitcher full time.
Also for people who said Beckett should of won the Cy Young over CC. CC had a lower ERA, More k's, less walks, and more innings pitches, he deserved it for the regular season.
What are you basing this on? Have you talked to Casey? I see no indication that this is the case.
I think its pretty simple, the Red Sox clearly like him more as a pitcher, they pay him so he will do what they say. If he keeps pitching like this they are going to make sure he puts all of his effort into pitching, so unless he comes out and sets the world on fire when he palys SS in a month or so i think its pretty clear he will be a full time pitcher next year.
He is having an impressive season pitching in A ball this year. But he already started struggling when facing better hitters, look at the numbers. According to the scouting report he doesnt have anything overpowering pitching wise. He will be a shortstop, its obvious.
I wouldnt call it struggling, as a 19 year old in high A his numbers are, 3.18 ERA, a .224 BAA, a higher K/IP rate than in low A, and a 19/1 K/BB rate, if that is struggling then i want to see what he'd do at the top of his game.
He doesnt have an overpowering fastball, but its 90-91 and he certainly projects to add 1-3 mph more to it, he also already has a devastating curve and a changeup that moves so much some scouts have thought it was a slider, so you can say he doesnt have an overpowering fastball, but he has VERY good stuff. He is never gonna be a bigtime strikeout guy because he keeps the ball down and gets alot of groundballs instead with his fastball which is the type of pitcher i like in Fenway.
I hope he does very good at SS, thats a very nice problem to have but i just think he stays at pitcher.
