According to Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, they will have the financial flexibility to offer someone a full max contract next summer. Speaking with “Dale & Holley” Monday, Grousbeck did not give specifics, but he reiterated this fact by saying “there is a situation under which we could do that.” Several high-profile players who would command a max contract are currently set to become free agents in 2010, including LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, and Chris Bosh. I'm probably misreading the quote, but Wyc could be referring to Rondo when he says "offer someone a full max contract next summer." That would be one situation feasible under the CBA wouldn't it? It seems like WEEI, or who ever reported this, just assumed he was talking about the free agents.
I personally would rather offer a max contract to the likes of Nowitzki, Bosh or Wade before offering a max to Rondo, whom I feel is worth about 8-10 mil.
I don't think we're in the running for Dirk, Wade, or Bosh. Dirk loves Dallas, its the only place he's ever known over here, Bosh would be redundant with KG still under contract, and Wade will not leave Miami for Boston, if he ever left Miami. Aim lower, or look at trades.
Well, the other major FA's available next year are Nash, Josh Howard, Amare (whom I believe we are making a play for right now) Michael Redd (who will more than likely take his 18.3 mil and stay in Milwaukee to be paid, already once having the opportunity to leave and go play with Lebron and deciding to take his max contract instead), Boozer, who is a walking injury, Etc.
Who do you think we are 'targeting' if not those original three mentioned? Yao Ming? Lebron? I guess if we do complete the trade for Amare, we will certainly re-up him for awhile.
