So with all this talk about the celtics going after the # 2 Pick I thought why not just try to go for a homerun to get the #1 Pick while still being able to be a contender for the next few years?

LAC sends : Baron Davis, Chris Kaman and #1 Pick( Blake Griffen)

Bos sends : Ray Allen , Rajon Rondo and JR Giddens

Why for LAC :
For the Clippers they are getting a 22 year old PG who already has a championship under his belt who probably would be one of the 1st 2 Picks in the 09 NBA Draft. You team him up in the backcourt with Eric Gordon and you have a heck of a backcourt for the next 10+ years. This trade also allows the Clippers to have an extra 20 MIL in cap space after Ray Allen's contract runs out after this season.  It would also save them an additional 65MIL over the next 4 years between Kaman and Baron Davis contracts.

With Ray's 19 MIL expiring + Camby's 10 MIL expiring = 30 MIL Coming off the cap after next year

That means their Team Salary for their 2010 - 11 signed Players before free agency signing period would be about 25 MIL. They would have about 23 MIL in cap room after resigning Rondo ( for 10 mil a year) and that also means they could become major players for:

Lebron
Wade
Bosh
Stoudamire
Nowitzki
Josh Howard
Michael Redd

If you can sign Lebron , Wade, Bosh or Stoudamire and add them to what you already have on the clippers  you are going to be in Good shape. The remain Roster of the Clippers could definitely give Lebron the team he needs to win a championship

I think Lebron would sign there too for these reasons

1) If he can bring a championship to the horrid Clippers organization he would be a hero
2) He loves being a Celebrity and if its not going to be NY , LA is the spot to be
3) He would get to play in the same building as Kobe for every home game and would love the challenge of trying to beat the Lakers on the Clippers.

If you can sign Lebron then Ray Allen and Marcus Camby would likey resign on the cheap for the chance to win a title with Lebron. If they can do that their Roster would definitely be able to contend for a championship

Possible Clippers 2010 - 11 Roster
PG: Rondo
SG: Ray Allen / Eric Gordon
SF: Lebron / Thorton
PF: Zack Randolph
 C: Camby

Why for the Celtics:
This roster in my opinion would give the Celtics just as good a chance to win a championship in the next few years as we had with Rondo and Ray , but it also gives us a franchise player for the future. The only reason I do tihs trade is because I think that Blake Griffen is going to be an absolute stud. There would be no other player more suited to bring Griffen along as a PF than KG. With the athletic ability of Griffen, KG would turn him into a beast. We also get a suitable replacement for Rondo in Baron Davis , who IMO is a championship level PG and a perfect 3rd option on a team.  While Baron Davis has had some injuries in the past he hasn't has any major injuries in the past 3 seasons and is still only 30 years old. I think that Baron can still play in the league at a very high level and will be able to put up compareable stats to Ray as the 2nd or 3rd option on this team and he is 5 years younger than Ray.

The Celtics would also be getting a legit starting C in the NBA who is still only 27 years old. He is averaging just a shade under a double double for his career 10 PPG , 8 RPG. He would be the perfect backup for Perk and would give us leverage when Perk's contract runs out or if god forbid Perk gets inured.

Boston Celtics
2009-10 Roster

69 MIL  + FA Pickups ( 7 MIL) = around 76 Mil for the 09-10 roster

PG: Davis    /  Anthony Carter or Marbury( Vet Min) / Pruitt
SG: Anthony Parker or Von Wafer (MLE) /  Walker / House
SF: PP      /   Grant Hill or Matt Barnes (Vet Min) / Griffen
PF: KG     /   Griffen /   Scal    /  Powe (IR)
 C: Perk    /  Kaman / KG

Roster going forward

2010 - 11 Team Salary = Est. 70-75 MIL for signed players

 Signed Players: PG: Davis
SG: Von Wafer or Anythony Parker , Walker
                 SF: PP
                 PF: KG , Griffen
                  C: Perk, Kaman
7 Open Roster Spots

Celtics 2010 - 11 UFA - Scal , House , TA , Pruitt

2011- 12 Team Salary = Est. 49 MIL for signed players

Signed Players: PG: Davis
SG: Parker or Wafer , Walker
                SF:
                PF: KG, Griffen
                 C: Perk, Kaman
8 Open Roster Spots

2011 - 12 UFA = PP

So what do you guys think? would you do this trade?

I think we get significantly worse at the SG position and don't think Davis would necessarily be a smooth fit at PG here.  With KG and PP still here and this trade were to happen, I think it makes things even more diffcult to get another championship in the small window of opportunity that we have.

We need a shooting guard.

KG, Perk, Griffen, and Kaman.... that's four starting big men on one team. I like Kaman, but i would try to move him for a guard and some crappy 7 footer.

If Davis was healthy last year then I'd be nervous about the drop in his production from the year before.

I just don't think the C's are willing to take on that kind of salary.  A big part of the reasoning behind trading Rondo would be because they don't want to pay him what he might be asking for.  So why would they then trade him for a much older and more injury prone PG, who likely makes more per year than Rondo would make in his extension?

If the C's trade Rondo, it will be to preserve Salary cap flexibility for the long term, while bringing in young guys who they feel would be safer bits to build around as the big 3 fade away.  Perhaps Griffin is someone to build around (I am not sure), but the money just doesn't work in this type of deal.

Just don't trust Davis to stay healthy enough for the season.

Means the Celtics need to find a starting SG and a PG cappable of starting.

Wow some people have really given up on next season for no apparent reason.

It seems like that at times, don't it? Why get rid of Rondo? After CP3, D-Williams, and Tony Parker, I can't think of another player I would want running the point.

Carl: And, technically, he's supposed to be spayed, and uh, he ain't that. I know that first hand. Go ahead, ask me how I know. Go ahead. Ask me. Ask me how I know.

TP for effort.

I'd have to say no for all of the reasons stated above.  We'd be extremely overloaded at some positions and completely thinned out at others.  Plus, they'd hypothetically get LeCrab and we get a ton of salary headaches..  No thank you.

You have to make this deal because, on talent, you get Kamen for free.

Baron and Ray are a wash.
Griffen and Rondo are a wash.
Kamen is much more valuable than Giddens.
"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

Except that you're replacing 2/5 of your starting five (chemistry?) plus you have a HUGE downgrade at the SG position.  You add a potential stud at PF but you already have a stud there and he can't play the 3 or 5 so he ends up on your bench.

Just because it appears that the Celtics appear to get the better net gain on "talent" doesn't necessarily mean its best for the team.

I don't make that trade.

Exactly, and I'd take my chances in the Rondo contract negotiations rather than take on a instant salary strain and potential chemistry strain.

Kaman can play both the 4 and the 5 position effectively and a 3 man rotation of KG, KP and CK at those positions would allow him to get his minutes.
