Does anyone know if the NBA even tests for this stuff?

I don't think they do, but the Olympics did.....

Dwyane Wade has filed lawsuit against a man who goes by the name Baron Richard von Houtman. von Houtman allegedly told Wade's basketball coach that Wade had used cocaine and steroids and is now being sued for libel and slander.

Baron Richard von Houtman?  For serious?  That's a flipping dumb name.  I therefore decline to ever take anything he says seriously.

If NBA players used steroids they would get faster and stronger and recover from injury quicker correct.  But wouldn't that mess up their shot?  Changing muscle mass so quickly would have to have a detrimental effect on ones shot, wouldn't it?

Unless it is ridiculous like the photo below, if a person maintains their flexibility through proper stretching to keep their range of motion, being stronger is only going to help an athlete with their longevity out there.

Not in terms of lack of movement but in terms of how much strength to put into the shot.  If you work out with out PEDs your muscle strength gains are not drastic and you can practice your shot and not notice much difference, but taking steroids can have quick fluxes in strength, shooting with the same effort but being much stronger could push the ball much farther than one would be used to.

I'll hypothetically give you the above, that it would ruin jump shooters, which is at least a theory as to why those players would avoid PED'S (TP4U for floating a decent theory out there, even if i dont really believe it, but lets say it were true)

Why wouldn't guys not known for shooting, I.E paint post players, want to get stronger?

I'm not saying that PEDs would give someone so much strength that they'd be out of the league since they can't shoot for crap.  But I could see it lowering their FG% maybe for a period of time until that person stabilizes their growth.

And yes this doesn't give an excuse for bruisers like Perk, Howard and other who just bump around down low.  Strength would be a huge asset for their set of skills.  Especially for someone like Howard who doesn't even shoot but just dunks.  So TP back at you.

Does this explain Wade's terrible jumper?

Look at Wades splits for FG% this year starting with November 50%, 44, 48, 50, 50, and 51%.  I'd say he shot the ball darn well.  Also take into account how many "our offense sucks I need to take some crazy shot with 3 defenders on me" type of shots.

Wouldn't surprise me.  If I had to guess three NBA stars on roids or HGH, it'd be Wade, LeBron, and Dwight Howard.

Guys...

the dude accusing Wade pretends to be a baron. He gave himself the title.

Hardly reliable.

Also, did you guys see that Wade is suing the guy for an ice cold 100 million?

thats a 1 followed by EIGHT zeros.
Is anyone insinuating Wade be kicked out of the league or anything along those lines? The topic is no longer whether Wade did or did not do steroids but rather the benefits of steroids for NBA players. Also, as I look back on Jose Canseco I no longer put stock in the "unreliable source" theory when it comes to steroids. The moment that finger is pointed my eyebrow is raised and I don't care who it is.

It doesn't really matter to me what the topic became. It started out as a discussion on Wade and Steriods/Cocaine. Since when is getting back on topic a crime?

I never though Jose Canseco was an unreliable source. He was in the league. This guy is a guy who pretends to be a baron and has a personal beef with Wade because of a failed business venture. THAT'S unreliable.

Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Nonsense. If Lebron used steroids back in HS by now he'd probably have some abnormal growth in his jaw or something... Wait. Nevermind.  8)

My thoughts exactly. Wade put on a hug amount of weight very quickly and his face changed, I simply chalked it up to hanging out with Charles Barkley; but who knows.

So because Canseco was in the major leagues he has automatic credibility? Can I ask how? This guy who pretends to be a Baron was a business partner and (relative to Canseco) around the person(s) he is accusing. Canseco has said himself that he wrote his book  to exact revenge against MLB for blackballing him so it's tough to know what is reliable and what isn't.

First of all, it's interesting that this information came to light as a result of a slander law suit...something that basically no baseball players brought against guys like Canseco. Does the fact that no slander suit was brought against Canseco coupled with the fact most of those Canseco accused ended up being proven of using steroids say anything about Wade's lawsuit? Presumably, none of those baseball players brought suit because they didn't have a leg to stand on. It's bold of Wade to bring suit (rather than just deny and let it go) if he is guilty.

However, it's naive to think there aren't PED's in Basketball. Nearly every advantage that steroids affords (strength, speed, recovery time, explosiveness, etc.) is something GM's and coaches look for in players. And basically every reason people say steroids would not help in basketball has a baseball analogy; obviously baseball was filled with the stuff and it clearly helped enhance performance. For example:

"steroids can't help with a jump shot" = "steroids doesn't help you time a curveball"

"Steroids don't help with agility" = "Steroids and muscle mass would make a hitter lose his quickness."

But all the guys he's named have been found to be PED users...i don't care why he wrote the book, hes been right.

People said he was a liar on clemens- guess not.

People said he lied on pettie- guess not

People said he lied about arod- guess not.

he called out manny as well, guess he was right eh?

I mean, jose is a scumbag, but so far he's been pretty spot on at nailing other cheaters.

Back up Crownsy I'm talking pre-book. Canseco sounded off on the BIG SHOW about "steroids in baseball" well before he wrote Vindicated... his famous "in september.. you'll all know in september" (referring to his book release) had as much radio shelf life as "it sucks and it stinks"

All I'm saying is I'm not willing to dismiss this guy until I see or hear what he has to bring to the table. Who knows? Maybe he Michael Phelped Wade with a CD case, a $100 bill rolled up and a needle in his A$$.

oh ok, I got a little confused there. No biggie. ;)

I was just trying to make the case that this guy accusing Wade of steroids and drug use has about as much credibility as Canseco before the crap hit the fan. That is why I'm not willing to dismiss him for lack of credibility... yet...
