Sam Kinnison always, and I mean always made me want to buy a gun and shoot him in the head. That voice where he will just be talking THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN HE'S SCREAMING IN A HIGH PITCHED VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!

God its getting me riled up right now.

Rodney Dangerfield is the best one line joke teller I've ever heard IMO..

I tell you, with my doctor, I don't get no respect.  I told him, "I've swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills."  He told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.

A girl called me once late at night, and she said "Come over, nobody's home." I went over. Nobody was home.

I made a toast to my wife on our tenth year anniversary. I raised the glass and said "to the best woman a man's ever had". Two waiters and the Maitre d' joined me!

Yeah I love me some Rodney.

IP, I thought the same of Sam Kinnison, but I've been listening to a lot more comedy on XM radio lately, and have been hearing him again.  Maybe it's just that I'm older now, but I definitely find a lot more humor in the stuff in between the screaming and yelling.

But yeh, Rodney was awesome.  I used to listen to "No Respect" over and over.

Are you listening on Raw Dog? That is what I miss most about my sirius radio subscription.

Yup.  It's in my wife's car, which I use for the long commute to school one weekend a month.  So I get about 6 hours worth of comedy condensed into one weekend.

Louis CK & Lewis Black are played quite a bit on there, and they are pretty [dang] funny at times too.
Yup

I can't believe he hasn't been mentioned yet:

Bill Hicks

And to echo what some others have already said:

Bill Cosby
Brian Reagan
Robin Williams
Eddie Murphy
Ralphie May (I love his "suprise vs. shock")
Dave Chappelle

I dont get why people put Dave Chapelle up there with the greats. Yea he WAS funny, but his standups were not his best work. His best work was the first two seasons of the Chapelle Show. I think he either let all of the success get to his head, or just simply wilted under the pressure to keep being funny. I dont know. But give me Martin Lawrence, Steve Harvey, and Old Eddie Murphy all day over Chapelle.

Oh, on my first list I forgot to mention Eddie Griffin and Kevin James.

Dave Chappelle, Killing the softly is the best single standup show I've ever seen. Sure, Richard Pryor and Chris Rock have been funnier for longer and most consistent, but Dave's show, thats the funniest of all time for my money.

Well, i mean, dave's story is out there. He laid it out on inside the actor's studio once he got back from going incognito in africa for a year.

He didn't let fame go to his head and just quit doing his show because he was rich or something, he had a severe nervous breakdown because he felt that he had lost all creative control over the show and that it was being used to show racism as "funny" and "not that big of a deal" and that he was the spokesperson for an attitude if "see, making fun of race issues is hilarious! even African American's agree race isn't a big deal anymore!" and not promoting an open dialogue, but rather a dismissal of the issue as stupid.

and from that he had a pretty severe mental breakdown that he's just now getting over. He hasn't done stand up or any other work since, to my knowledge.

I disagree that his stand up stuff "wasn't his best work". I saw him live twice pre-comedy central and have his albums, he was outstanding. killing me softly is the second best comedy album I've ever heard, Eddie murphy's delirious gets the number one nod.

Dave's story is pretty sad IMO, but its not a "fame went to his head" story, its about being thrust into a situation your uncomfortable with and having it spiral out of control on you. He left alot of money on the table by having his mental break and walking away, I think a recent article I saw said he made little money from the show post lawsuit by comedy central for breach of contract (which they were right to file)

HE's not starving or anything, but he's not living the fat cat lifestyle or something.

He did Dave Chappelle's block party thing...

Ummmm, I think he did a standup special too.

But I agree, his early stand was through the roof funny. The Seasame Street bit?

Completely agree with the Chappelle love.  His stand up is just as funny as his show.  At the height of his show's popularity he preformed at my college, and it was hysterical.  I know that he has done a handful of shows since he came back, but I think they all were real small very little publicized shows.  With that said, the Player Hater's Ball is the funniest single sketch i've ever seen in my life

EDIT: Make it so you could see where your post was

Amazing I'm the first here to mention this guy, not only a Boston native but hands down the funniest contemporary stand-up comedian: Bill Burr.  Guys, if you haven't had the chance, YouTube this guy immediately and tell me you don't agree.  He's totally brilliant, puts almost-funny guys like Patton Oswalt to shame...
